What size cnc should I build

Hi All

I build model planes from plans and need advice on what size machine to build.

What should the frame size be and what height should I have for the Z axis.

It would cut through the Balsa/Plywood to a depth where it then can be pushed out when needed and the light sanding to finish off.

To cut out the fuselage would be 1M but this can be cut in half or thirds at a push. Width can be 30cm (working surface}

I would like to cut ou some foam plugs for canopy and engine nacelles.

Any help would be appreciated.

.Also read about the lead screw nut and wondered why its not made from Bronze as this is self lubricating and hard wearing. We use them in flywheels as spigot bearings for the inputshaft of the gearbox.

Imports are made of an unknown “brass”. Why not bronze, the nuts are extremly cheap and can be replaced in under a minute…so cost.

As for the size, 1M x0.3M Balsa…no worries. Z 1.5" should handle anything you want…as the endmills are only 1.5" MAX.

It is written is many places but start small, leave room on your belt for longer, and you can very very easily go bigger, nothing ever limits this. No size decision is very permanent, even the lead screw can safely have 4" of excess.
