What are you YouTubing?

This weeks question is…What are you watching on YouTube? What is it about?

I am excited for this series. I am always surprised at how nuclear reactors are simple and clever, but also unintuitive and complex. This reactor raises a blanket of U238 (which isn’t very radioactive) to increase the intensity of the main reaction because neutrons will bounce off of the U238 and then are more likely to hit U235 in the middle. I can just imagine super smart physicists working out fundamental truths about the elements and then bubbling that all up to a design to just raise or lower a ring of hard metal. It blows my mind.

During Covid, I think Smarter Every Day and Jeremy Fielding are 2 channels that I just kinda binge watched everything they had available… A lot of interesting stuff

I used to watch DroneBot Workshop a lot too… but I got to where I have to watch it at 1.25x or 1.5x to stay interested…

SAM THE COOKING GUY - YouTube
Fun to watch and some cools meal ideas. 3 times a week and them edit a pretty good video.

Life Uncontained - YouTube
Been watching this couple for a while. Total off grid living and building everything themselves. The progression of the family over the years and how they started has been pretty cool to watch.

Paul’s Garage (Paul’s Garage) - YouTube
This guy is pretty good. Not massive amounts of frequent content but funny and informative. Lot of casting stuff and metal melting.

I watch trailmater and fabrats. I think the highway to hell and ice road truckers series got me on to towing in general. Combine towing and offroad sand and extreme trails and fabrication and I think these guys would be fun to spend a day with. Build, fix, rescue…

Yeah, Smarter Every Day is great, been watching that for a long time!

Maker content:
Colin Furze’s Secret Tunnel:
This is one that my fiance and I have been watching avidly. I’m sure most people have run into this as part of the algorithm but if not then it’s well worth checking out.

EV content:
Gavin’s EV Reviews on the Ecotricity NZ channel. No-nonsense reviews and general goof-ballery, good for anyone who wants to see what Kiwi humour is like. Kinda like a low-rent version of some of the older Top-Gear car reviews

Gaming content:
I’ve never played Rust but I’ve been very much enjoying watching videos of people doing crazy stuff in it. Zchum and his 2nd channel Zchum Extra are pretty entertaining.

General Entertainment:
Jet Lag: The Game
These are a bunch of real-world games like tag, hide and seek, capture the flag etc. played in various places around the world, mostly in public and on public transport, done by the guys from Wendover productions. We’ve been going back through all of these from the start as our ‘last thing before bed’ watch.

We also listen to the Regulation Podcast, which is a group of people who used to be part of the Rooster Teeth online production company. They’re primarily a podcast but do supplemental video content or gaming content that is often pretty amusing. One of the guys is Gavin from the Slow-Mo Guys Youtube channel. It’s difficult to explain the podcast because it’s not really ‘about’ anything, it’s mostly them coming up with weird challenges for each other to do, drafts where they can argue over what the best category of thing is, all sorts of stuff. It gets pretty wacky, I like it.

Also, I love these posts so much already! I note that you didn’t answer the question last time, so this time: What are YOU watching on YouTube, @CarmenJ ?

@CarmenJ, thanks for sparking this topic. Appreciate the :radioactive: breeder and other interesting channels/videos folks are sharing.

Colin Furze’s multi phased Secret Tunnel projects are epic. I keep hoping Colin will make a tunnel boring machine, but no…

Currently watching a Mostly CNC’d Elevated Geodesic Dome Office Pod…

My grandchildren were aghast when they discovered I subscribed to 150 or so channels. This is because I have very eclectic tastes, and I like to confuse the heck out of the algorithm.

Every week I do my car building vicariously with an update on what’s been going on at Retropower. These guys are seriously good at what they do.

I’ve been following the Globe 5.80’s across the Atlantic, and the Round the World Race starts soon. For those interested, they are a 19ft single handed sailing boat designed more for safety than speed, but make for interesting class racing across oceans. I’m kind of collaborating on a friend’s build at the moment in that really highly detailed way that I do, trying to find ways to “improve” a very strictly controlled one-design.

For entertainment in a making kind of a way there’s nothing quite like the Swedish Maker

But really kids - for every hour you spend watching youtube, you should be spending four or five out doors doing something or in the shed fixing stuff!

Matt’s Offroad Recovery is a good one too. Those 2 guys end up on a lot of his videos as well.

I also watch Cleetus, Watch Wes Work, Modbot, Letsdig18 and several others I can’t think of right now.

I think that’s what gives this forum a great depth of expertise. There’s pretty much someone here who’s been there done that, no matter what the issue!!

I do watch MORR as well. Lehtos law, fridays with frank, and clips of the fat electrician are also interesting.

I’m a nerd! I’m also preparing for school for CAM. I’m usually a sucker for videos about building things while someone with a soothing voice narrates what they are doing.

The Flush, Western Wing Shooter, Hotdog Hans, Nate Bargatze, and Mike Rowe are what I’ve been watching the most lately.
