Any idea what I’ve done wrong to arrive here?
The screen turns on when I power up the machine, but it’s got two lines through it and is severely washed out.
That ain’t good. Check and see if a connector might have come loose on the LCD board. I think those lines mean the soldered connection to that line went bad. At least that’s what it meant on my old Gameboy! To fix it on the GB you just reflowed the connection array with a hot iron. If you run out of options you could try it.
You have it plugged in backwards.

Sure enough that was it. Swear I double checked that, but guess I kept getting it wrong.
