Upgraded z with 8040U

I’ve been growing a little more frustrated lately with my z axis (backlash, constant tweaking, lowers itself if servo disarmed and spinning, steel posts that can hit things etc), so I set about seeing if I could upgrade it with a cheapo 4080U z axis. It cost around $30 on Amazon to acquire the part, and I designed some core inserts that clamp it in place without remaking the whole core entirely (which I will probably do eventually).

The end results seem pretty good, it’s solid, the clearance is great, it’s clean etc… but I’ll be stress testing it with some metal cuts soon and have more insight then. I lost around 10mm X and 40mm Y using the included metal mount, but I may design one to gain most of that back.

It’s nothing remarkable, but a quickly designed mount was able to bring the X and Y loss down to 10mm.

Looks like it fits well, any updates on the stress testing??

It’s been great! Best upgrade I’ve made so far. I redid some of my previous aluminum pieces with much less chatter and headache, didn’t need to worry about dabbing any wd40 in a pinch etc. It’s held up well.
