The wifey is undergoing conversion therapy with the next machine I am building for her. For what little she uses her PC for, the transition should be easy.

Yeah, that and the continuous mandatory updates, makes me crazy. Also hate the UI.

The windows 7 versions I’m using at home are the ones right out of the installation CD, with zero updates (entirely deactivated).
Still running as fast as day 1, still works perfectly fine in 2023, I’m yet to find any kind of issue with it.

Ah yeah, one: support for nvme disks wasn’t available at that time, so it was a bit more difficult to make it work. But that’s the kind of problem you only get once, during the installation of the OS.

Do you connect it to the internet? How did it not get overrun with malware/viruses?

My last Win7 machine just kicked the bucket. 2TB Seagate HDD. 'Nuff said…

It might be time to upgrade the Ubuntu 9.04 installations, but there are a few things that I actually need Java 6 for… The only real problem is that all of my browsers refuse to connect to the old CUPS server over https because the old encryption is obsoleted.

I do use Windows for some things just because it’s the path of least resistance. It always bothered me that blu-ray players ran linux under the hood, but there was no blu-ray player software for Linux readily available. As such the machine connected to my TV runs Windows almost exclusively for that purpose. It’s been easily a year since I actually put a disk in the optical drive though, so…

Yeah I’m posting from one right now.
I just don’t download stuff without checking it first, and I avoid sketchy websites (I make an exception for this one, hehe). Cameras and microphones are physically disconnected since I don’t use those anyway, and to be honest I just don’t really have anything of value to steal or anything very secret or important. Stuff is saved on multiple machines plus external drives backups so even if one computer gets ransomwared I won’t lose much.

Also I think most people stopped developping and using malwares intended for such old systems, it’s a bit too niche to make money I guess.

FWIW, VLC with MakeMKV runs most of my BRs but not all.

Naa, it’s still out there in force.
