Current workflow: I set up my models on a desktop and move the gcode to my Octoprint (V1pi) on the MPCNC. I then head over to the shop (other side of the basement) and connect to Octoprint with my phone, home, jog, etc with it and then start the print.
I was thinking about installing a dedicated screen to the Octopi and installing TouchUI to get take the phone out of my process… I’m always afraid I’m going to press the wrong button with my fat fingers on my phone and attempt to send my gantry outside of the rails…
Does anyone have any advice for this?
I found an old post from Jeff on the subject back from 2017, but that was about it.
You need a screen that’s at least 1080. The raspberry pi “hd” touch screen isn’t high enough resolution. Cheap easy way is picking up a kindle fire tablet and pointing the browser to the pi.
The touchui is still just a web page connected to the pi. Running that on a screen on the pi seems silly to me because:
It uses extra resources on the pi. Not just displaying the webpage, but running the whole desktop and driving a high resolution screen.
It would be tethered to the pi. So even though it is serving the content through a web page, it is stuck in one spot.
Barry’s suggestion of a cheap tablet or something like that seems like a much better choice to me. Plus, it is very flexible to run one of the other octoprint android apps or be used in a future project.
Thanks Barry and Jeff - I have two 3D printers as well and it could move around with me, although the two printers are right behind my desktop.
Thanks Uwe - I watched the Chris’ Basement video already, but didn’t see the other. I can see why the display resolution is important… I don’t want to have to scroll up and down at all.
