Hello guys, so I want a 600x600x81mm working area for cutting mostly wood, plastic, engraving acrylic, maybe laser. I want to use SS 1"OD and I found two types:
SS OD 1" ASTM A270 (Sanitary purposes) : thickness 1.5mm and 1.65mm … $50
SS OD 1 ASTM A554 (Ornamental/stairs railing): thickness 1.5mm …$25
Are ornamental tubings good for the frame construction?
And also for gantry and z axis, should I try to get thinner tubings?
I think i’m overthinking it before buying the mpcnc
Greetings from Peru
I’d never heard of these before. Judging by this link…
I don’t think I’d pay that much extra for the 1.65mm thickness vs 1.5mm.
As for the gantry tubes, I’d argue that thinner is the wrong direction to go. The outer frame tubes can at least be supported if you notice sag. The gantry moves, so the stiffness is basically from the tube. I think the notion is to remove weight, but these things really won’t move fast enough that it’s an issue. If it is, usually it’s a question of acceleration, not top speed, and that’s easy to tune.
For the Z axis, I’d say it matters even less, unless you plan on sticking the router way out the bottom, in which case we should probably be having a different discussion, first
Good luck with the build!
I used 1” SS with a wall thickness of 0.065” (1.651mm). When discussing the order with the guy at metal supermarket he said they also had 800 grit (originally we were talking about 180 grit which has a dull finish). I assumed 800 would cost more but he said “all depends on stock and what they are buying the most of”. He checked and 800 grit was cheaper.
On my bill it is listed as: Steel Round Tubing 304 in the 600 Grit 1.000 x 0.065
I have no concern with flex and it is nice and shiny
