Spindle direction and up-cut vs. down-cut

If I had a upcut bit installed in a spindle turning clockwise (which I think is the normal way) but I reverse the direction of the spindle, does that in effect turn the upcut bit into a downcut bit? Or am I just off in my thinking?

I think that would make your bit not cut, as the blade on it would be backwards.

It’s the angle the blade hits your wood, on an upcut, the slope will be like a shim under the wood, pulling it up, vs a downcut, which will contact the top of your piece first, and push it down.

Ok… I was wondering that… basically the ‘back-side’ of the cutting edge would be striking the wood and therefore nothing would happen.

Edit: Well… nothing good would happen.

Or to put it in a more manly metaphor, you can’t shave by pushing your razor around your face, now can you?

I’m imagining it will be a great way to start a fire :fire:
