So much fun!

Lol, my first computer used PC-DOS (MS-DOS alternative) on a 5 1/4" floppy drive.

I also remember using punch cards for a programming class at tech school, and doing reports and homework on the library’s Apple IIe. And, oh yeah, 8" floppy disks

OK - my first computer was for my business - an Apple Lisa. I’m guessing some of you will have to look that up!:rofl:

I turn at the end of this year. We used to type in the apple ][ programs from byte magazine. We had a Franklin apple clone and a //e, then a xerox 8088 with msdos and then ibm dos. I played conan, moonpatrol, and loderunner. one saturday my sister and i tried to see how far we could get on loderunner and got to level 105 or 108 I forget and we stopped because we were tired of sitting there.

It looks like you are at that age where you are starting to forget things… like numbers!

Don’t feel bad, I’m right there with you!

We are quite a few early eighties kids here! Funny how our computer/gaming/technology is quite similar, despite living on different sides of the globe.

I remember having a 286 and being very jealous of my friend how had a newer pc with cd-rom. He had Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. The game was absolutely mesmerizing, so I tried to split up the cd content onto 3.5" diskettes. I don’t remember how many I had to use… but it didn’t work (not suprisingly!!)

Cleaning the basement, look what I found:

The floppy discs have cheats on them so you get a Sonic Tank on mission three as Areides!

There were also some demo CDs including a booklet with instructions how to run it for every demo and what kind of machine you’d need…

P.S.: Loved Dungeon Keeper.

I used to play dune II. It was the precursor to command and conquer and age of empires.

I went through Pool of Radiance and the Gold Box Series. Lost many hours to those, some of which was to switching the floppy disks endlessly.

Says so right on the box! It’s a classic collection thingy, came out after C&C was a thing.

Look what I bought a year or two back:

I have been contemplating selling it, but never made a decision. I can never get this again… But also, I don’t relly need it.
Already sold my Warhammer Vampire army. That was a sad day.

Just a couple of years behind you! Cut my teeth on TRS-80s, transcribing ballistics simulators in BASIC from magazines, etc. I still remember going to a friend’s house (his mom was the vice-principal), starting the load of “Code of Hammurabi” from cassette, then going down for lunch, and hoping nothing went wrong with the load, and that it was ready to play when we got back…

My own journey began when I got back from summer camp, and there was a brand new Apple ][+ waiting for me, complete with a copy of Colossal Caverns. I later upgraded it to 64K or RAM, and added a second disk drive, mainly to support my Wizardry habit…

But my very first games were “Hunt the Wumpus” on the mainframes at Peabody College for Teachers (now part of Vanderbilt U), using thermal printer terminals (no CRT for you, kid!). I hope I didn’t cause too much trouble for my folks…

Which probably explains the hours lost to rogue and moria during my own college years, and my continued interest in Dwarf Fortress…

Do you play Dwarf Fortress? For real??!

Not so much recently. But ever since the 2D days, before you could dig down

I’m old enough to remember that Notch was heavily inspired by DF when he started down the road to Minecraft. I even remember seeing/playing early demos and thinking “Cool! First-person DF!”

Kitfox and the distro deal with Steam has helped a lot, and I think it’s great that Tarn and Zach plan to keep a free version (minus the graphical pizzaz) forever.

The only thing I’ve seen that comes close to DF for depth/complexity and obscurity is UnReal World from some of your (potentially still hopped up on Pervitin) buddies in Finland.

I’m intrigued by DF, but never got into it. Rimworld seems like a more accessible take on the genre, but I never played it.

The Steam release tempted me, it’s easier when everything is pre packaged and good to go.

I’ve played Cataclysm DDA a little, but I don’t have too much time in my life. I guess DF is somehow similar, maybe even worse. Did anyone ever claim that heroin is a good idea?! :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes::exploding_head::face_with_peeking_eye:

Rimworld is brilliant, including, basically, the Firefly soundtrack.

Umm… Pervitin is Meth, not Heroin. Get your hard drugs straight. One is a stimulant the other… isn’t.

Rimworld occupies an odd space for me. It’s very obviously DF-lite for me. But it feels like they got a third of the way through the tech tree and got bored and sort of gave up. I see it in a lot of colony builders… I had to add a bunch of mods to make it feel more like a complete game. But it does nail the “losing is fun!” vibe…

But yes, the soundtrack is a solid vibe.

Did you guys see the new Squadron 42 gameplay? First hour something… Henry Cavil, Gary Oldman, Gillian Anderson, Mark Hamill, Mark Strong , Ben Mendelsohn. It looks so great. It’s nearly been 10 years that I supported the Kickstarter and man did they add stuff to it…

Yea, it’s been “feature complete” since last year, and they still pushed the release to next year.
