I run a A40640 on my Primo using a Rambo board. The slower, 8-bit board is not an issue for laser cutting. For laser engraving it may be somewhat of a bottleneck, but it is unclear. I played with running it faster, and I started to get artifacts in my engravings. My best guess is that the movement of all the mass of a core (even without a router) introduces vibrations at higher speeds, so even if a 32-bit board could process g-code faster, I may not be able to move faster and get quality results.
I run both router and laser jobs using a SD card. This keeps the process the same between the two the same, so I have less chance of making mistakes. I have tested driving my Primo/Rambo directly from Lightburn using USB, and it worked fine.
