Sign with small stained glass panels

Made this sign with an LR2, based on design from a commemoration bench plaque. It was my first design that incorporated raised text (instead of inset v-bit text), and stained glass panels, and I was quite happy with the finished look.

  • Total time with designing, running experiments in MDF, slab flattening on the LR2, and final stressful routing with multiple bits was about a week.
  • Design in Inkscape, gcode generated in EstlCAM.
  • Stained glass is held in with dabs of clear silicone caulk. I didn’t want the solid edges that you get with copper foil wrapping, but leaving them bare also has issues: without backlighting, you can see the rough edges of the glass after cutting and grinding.
  • I deliberately left thin wood strips at the transitions between panels because I knew I couldn’t get the glass to fit perfectly.
  • Finished with Osmo Polyx oil.
