All righty. I’ve been stressing a bit worrying about how to package parts, and waffling a bit on how exactly I wanted to partially assemble things.

I keep worrying about breaking parts in rough handling by airline baggage handlers.

Then a few minutes ago I had either a brain fart or an epiphany of sorts. I’m stopping at a makerspace on the way in. If a plastic part gets broken or whatever we can print another.

I’m going to pack up all the parts as best I can into the hard case and my checked bag and off we go. That may be a dumb move- but I also realized that if my batteries get confiscated (I was also stressing about that) or even if my luggage goes missing, with those tablets in my carry-on bag, a few community members and a solid day at a makerspace I’d still end up with something to show and talk about. Talking to and meeting the maker community is, after all, why I’m going.

That decision plus getting Aza’s tablets in hand have me oddly calm.

So, now I’m focusing on getting everything packed and ready and keeping an eye on the airline schedules.

I need to follow up on guest tickets, so those of you who got a DM before may get another. They had already printed the exhibitor passes and I’m not even certain I will get one. But I’ll still get event tickets for each of you. If I need an email or other info you’ll get a DM from me probably tomorrow.

I hve tickets in hand for the thread participants.
If anyone else from the forum is planning to make a visit- even a stealth lurker, reach out now and I might be able to get more.

I’m finishing packing now, a brief visit to the day job in the morning, then off to the airport.

I’m SO excited to meet folks I’ve only ever chatted with on the forums, and looking forward to attending SMRRF.

Mostly notes for future me:

I fit the items listed below in a 25” rolling suitcase.

I couldn’t quite fit it in the Apache travel case. Oh well.

Next time I plan to bring my own milled, printed, pressed, custom version.

The list:
Ryans LR4 hardware kit, printed parts kit, jackpot, V1 table cover, a few stacks of V1 stickers, a power strip and a few odds and ends.

I thought I took a picture but apparently not. I’m not nearly as good at packing as Ryan. The thought of customs agents trying to put it all back in if tightly and neatly packed is horrifying to me.

The weight on my crappy Amazon luggage scale: 35 lbs ready to check.

Also for future me- United airlines now asks battery packs be in the under seat bag and not overhead compartment. Luckily I had room to shuffle.

UK now wants an Electric Travel Authorization for American visitors. You can apply with an app the Home Office puts out. Longest part is getting the passport and personal photo taken in a way the app likes. Took me about 30 minutes to do so.

When I did this a couple of weeks ago I submitted it and the ETA was in my email 10 minutes later.

The ETA is good for 2 years at present.

No such rules for Germany at present for American visitors. I read this might be changing so I’ll keep an eye on that.

Rail and bus schedules in Germany and in the UK are much better organized than here locally in Colorado.

It’s been a bit of an interesting couple of travel days. More on that later.

Made it to Manchester and onto my train, so should get to my hotel in Nottingham for a scheduled early check in.

That means I will make it to the Nottingham HackSpace open house this evening. Yay!

Sadly, I did not arrive in Hamburg with enough time to visit @Tokoloshe . I’m very sad about that.

Things you never want to see in your travel app:

After some interesting turns, my luggage is all still with me.

The bag with Ryan’s part kit was indeed reorganized by one or more screenings.

Either they packed it better  or perhaps it’s missing a plastic part or two. Easy enough to deal with if so.

I haven’t yet been able to update the tablets that @azab2c provided but will work that hopefully today.

More notes for future me:

Not only do power backs or batteries need to not go in the overhead bin in the EU, they are prohibited from use while in flight. I didn’t try that because I have a MagSafe extra battery for my iPhone, but a gentleman behind me on the flight to Manchester was hassled for charging from a power bank.

Twice I used the iPhone to pay for onboard items, one on the flight from Frankfurt to Hamburg and once on the flight from Hamburg to Manchester. The air crew didn’t blink at an iPhone with a MagSafe battery. The techie in me wants to scream out how ridiculous that is. The pragmatist in me noted that for future consideration.

Even with some travel hiccups I feel fortunate and super excited to be more or less on time for the UK part of my trip.

Notable lines from along the way:

“Impressive “. Security at Hamburg watching me pull batteries, phones, tablets, and a MacBook form seemingly every compartment of my travel backpack and personal item bag.

“Are you bloody movin here?”
Fellow on the train from Manchester Piccadilly to Nottingham on seeing two checked bags, a travel backpack and personal item bag.

Welcome to England. Have you met the rain yet?

What’s your plans for Thurs/Fri @MakerJim?

No rain so far. Partly to mostly sunny for me so far. Blue skies in Nottingham at the moment.

Proof: (oh, and I think I found Shaun the Sheep  )

(Yes, I know I’m nowhere near the big city.)

Near term plans:

Wednesday later PM- get to Nottingham HackSpace for their open house.
Thursday- build marathon at the Nottingham HackSpace (If they’ll have me  )
Friday- get to the Dalton building, set up the little table that I got, check into hotel.
Sat/Sun - SMRRF
Mon- Outbound back to US.

Anyone local please feel free to join me for any or all of it.
I can’t wait to meet folks!
I have tickets for the weekend for those that I’ve DM’d with the last week or so.

Okay, I can be in Nottingham tomorrow to help you out. We’ll see how that goes and see what Friday brings. I’ll be in Manchester Sat/Sun for sure!

The adventure begins! Or the adventure continues!

This is thrilling Jim! I have butterflies in my stomach as though it was me seeing how well my preparations worked out. You don’t need to worry about us. But these updates are definitely appreciated!

I love Shawn the sheep.

Last night I couldn’t stop wondering how it was all going. I love the updates, if I ever do make it out there I have a frame of reference.

The travel drama and deadlines are over, nothing but good times from here on out!!!

I’m so looking forward to that.

Placing this here for future me:

This is what I brought to use as a battery holder for the build:

This one is a straight up build of this item:

All I need to do is to pull the “top” (bottom in this picture) off, and either match drill if we have strut plates or just tie in place if not. Or, perhaps, just extend the power wires out if I instead choose to set the battery nearby instead of flying it.

I hope more of us from the US v1e community make it out here for future events.

I am taking many notes, it’s been a LONG time since I traveled to a show.
This isn’t about me, it’s about the community - so the chance to meet fellow community members here as well as the larger community at SMRRF has me delieriously happy.

All the cool new projects that we might not have ever experienced in any way is too cool. Maybe instead of a printer that uses coffee there is one that uses tea. :joy:

@MakerJim glad to hear most of your traveling is done. Even though your Manchester-Nottingham trips are ~2hrs each way.

Appreciate seeing your updates, pics and write up. Am looking forward to seeing how the speed run assembly goes. Great that local Nottingham crew are able to help swarm and help assemble the build. Am wondering if you guys end up breaking some assembly record?

I’ll use the DM we have to share more usage info today, get feedback, make changes, and share .apk download (probably Thurs).

The “Update” will add an additional app. Process should low stress, low risk, and relatively small. Am verifying update process on my remaining tablet. Update is small since it reuses images/videos content already on the device.

So, the existing shipped app will remain unaffected, giving you a safe backup option (incase the update ends up being :poop:).

Improved some things based on limited testing at a bar with friends… the BT keyboard helps with visually assisted adhoc chats about V1E with 5 people at once… I set tablet at end of table we were gathered around, and then, rambled through my v1e ted talk while using key shortcuts to flip between sections, and respond to heckles/questions e.g. adhoc search for guitar projects to inspire my musician friend).

I’ve often wondered if a speed build would be a session to do at something like an RMRRF. This will be interesting to watch. Maybe a dry run for things in the future.

I’ll be looking for the details.

Oooh. I was wondering what the conection was.
How tightly tied are the keyboards to the devices? Do you mind if I find a sharpie or something and put a dot on the back of one so I can keep them straight? Or maybe some low stick painters’ tape if I can find some.

Sounds fun!

I finally got to meet @FreneticScribbler, and see the NottingHack space.

I received an informal tour, and even sat through a weekly members meeting as a guest.
The challenges makerspaces face have many consistent themes. A different topic for some other day.

AJ had a treat- strut plates, cut and only needing some finish to be ready to go:

Starting the build marathon 09:00 tomorrow local time. Will be at least three of us there.

Pleasure to meet you in the real @MakerJim

Boxanne the Co2 laser cooperated for us today… and now in colour. I ain’t a painter (too sober for that) but it adds a little something.

It’s beautiful!

I brought a silver sharpie marker, hoping the crew that builds and takes this machine to SMRRF should sign the strut plates somewhere out of the way.

Just thinking out loud… what’s folks’ favorite pen holder for the LR4?

Anyone up to create a SMRRF quick plot?

This is the only one I have used personally…

I know there are several others floating around as well
