Sanjay Mortimer Rep Rap Festival

There has got to be a free outlet somewhere. A long lead and some gaffer tape, problem solved!

That’s specifically what they don’t want. All the no wall power booths sharing long extension cords and very few wall outlets.

Stationary bike connected to an Alternator???

Replace the bike with a campfire and sterling engine?

I mean… I would assume ā€œcampfireā€ is AT LEAST as much of a safety hazard as ā€œshared extension cord running across the walkwayā€ā€¦

Random question-

@ChrisB - I want to take you up on this offer. What tubing size would that be, from which supplier?
I want to make sure I have the right size printed parts for the conduit we will use.

I still haven’t heard back from the Manchester makerspace, which tells me they’re not interested or perhaps it’s blowback due to the foul state of politics.

Do you have contact info for the makerspace in Leeds? I may change my accommodations the first day or two so I can be close by if the Leeds makerspace shows interest.

In the posts below I’ll ping folks about tickets if you plan to visit the show and want to stop by the table I have; I will offer a ticket for you if you plan to spend even just a few minutes at the table talking to visitors. I can only ping I think three people per post so will do that as a set of spam posts. Please let me know soon if you’d like a ticket / credential for the visit.

@ChrisB @FreneticScribbler @stevempotter

Also pinging @apl4 @DIY_Engineer @igorcutoff for the ticket offer.

Finally, @AshleyC and any other folks that might want to visit the show and are willing to spend a few minutes at the table talking about your V1 machines or projects- Let me know if you’d like credentials.

I would be happy to spend time at your stand and talk to people. Plese count me in for a VIP ticket.

Or is that a V1P ticket?

Hey. Sorry. Been out of the loop for a while as it’s really the wrong weather to be in the CNC shed! Appreciate the poke and apologies I didn’t pick up on the first one.

I’m still intrested in attending though not certain if I’m really the right person to rep V1E.

We can get Dewalt, Makita, Milwaukee, Ryobi pretty much everywhere here. Other brands also available but less off the shelf.

Whilst it’s a bit further from Manchester than Leeds I’d love to show any and all of you around Nottingham Hackspace! Standing offer tbh. Potentially also a venue for a build marathon?

My machine is available, which is… er, a lot closer to yellow brick than it used to be, although still not very pretty. I do have some amount of time to work on that fact. I own a van, so potentially transporting the gantry to the show would be easy - would need a smaller table axis for sure though :stuck_out_tongue:

Happy also to arrange the acqusition and transport of any materials (although 8 x 4 ft sheets have to go on the roof! ) I am fortunate to have a great metal wholesaler (FH Brundle) pretty local, and various sources of sheet goods.

Probably can also solve the power issue too. Have plenty of power tool batteries but also bigger battery packs for running speakers in the middle of fields without having to dick about with generators.

Have I missed anything?

Thank you! a very generous offer. I’m still sorting out what we may do for build sessions.
It looks like you have reasonably good mass transit.

I think I have some options to move around as I arrive and spend the week getting ready for the show.

I’m doing research on the two potential spaces, and in fact want to visit both if possible.
One of the points of traveling to attend maker events is… spending time with my fellow makers.

What size tubing are you using on your LR4 builds? I want to be sure I have the right size planned for anything I pre-print, have printed, or coordinate printing.

It’s less about repping v1e, which I am happy to do myself (and which I think Ryan supports)

For me, this is much more about being able to talk about the experience of being a community member. I don’t want folks to feel like they’re chained to the small table we have. It’s such a great experience to be able to walk the show and interact with the folks at the show.

We tell our stories of how we came to be V1 community members and listen to / interact with all the other makers filtering through the event.

I’ll get you a ticket and you can decide for yourself if and how much time you want to spend at our table.

We’d love to have you  AFAIK we’re the biggest in the UK - London outstrips us membership wise, but we have 6500sqft to play with…

Not conduit - conduit here theoretically comes in 20, 25 and 32mm OD but everyone has decided that ā€˜just run another 20mm’ is preferable to using a larger conduit, so 25mm and 32mm are not very cost effective.

I used ā€œERW Tube 30mm O/D x 1.5mm wallā€ (possibly slightly thin now I think about it?) from the wholesalers. Dirt cheap though. Ā£16.60 for a 6m length, no delivery fee because I fetched it, and they cut it to length for me as well (6m tube on top of my van would be not only silly but very illegal!)

OK!

Superb - thank you for tagging me.

I am hoping to attend the event and woud be happy to talk to anyone who will listen about my build experience! (Although I am still at a fairly early stage - just got the Primo cutting well for the most part, but it is still a vipers nest of wiring, and I am still trying to figure out the best software combo to use…).

While I certainly hope to attend, my plans can often change at the last minute due to the family situation I mentioned previously.

Thank you to everyone that has responded. My plans are starting to have more clarity, and I’m going to keep coordinating here in the thread.

The broad details of my trip are that I’m going to fly to Germany and use an extended layover to pop in and visit Philipp. Then, off to Manchester the following morning.

I’m looking at hotels and the makerspaces that we’ve discussed above. I’d like to find a way to visit each.

I’m also trading off a wild build session versus a more sane plan of bringing partially assembled sections like a beam, pre-assembled YZ plates etc.

That approach would have particular appeal if we can pre-coordinate some plans like a table and tubing and space to do final assembly and test.

Ryan is going to arrange to get some V1 stuff to give out, and we’re going to give the SMRRF charity a Jackpot CNC controller for their raffle.

The machine at the show is going to be batery powered and since the Ryobi brand is stuff I’ve got a bunch of I"m going to bring some of that and if neccesary get more locally.

The show experience is mostly showing the machine, talking about it, talking about the community, and generally savoring being in a community of fellow makers. I don’t sell anything and don’t have anything to sell. I’m going to configure it with a pen holder so the SMRRF version of it will be a draw bot. When we decide the machine’s ultimate disposition I’ll make sure we have mounts for whatever router it will end up with.

I hope folks are able to stop in and chat with each other and the crowd.

When I go home, I won’t be able to take even the small machine we build back with me. So, I’m going to ask the community that shows up to help find a home for it. A space, a school, a member- I’ll let us work out those details.

I’m going to have the machine ā€œwrongā€ with the Y axis being short on the machine and the beam being as wide as I can fit on the SMRRF table we have. That means when we’re done with the show that machine can get a properly sized Y and be a very respectable mid sized machine.

I’m deep into studying hotel options and thinking about how to approach this whirlwind of a visit.

Hit me with your questions, and tell me what I’m forgetting or messing up.

I’m really exited to meet community members and fellow makers all through my visit.

Hey @MakerJim

Deta TTE Round Steel Galvanised Class 4 Conduit Tube 25mm x 3m - Screwfix is the easy to get off the shelf conduit (25mm).

Rexel do have a store in Manchester (& Leeds) that do 32mm..

Leeds hackspace is https://leedshackspace.org.uk/

I don’t think conduit is the best option for rails for us here in the UK. 25mm is too small for the LR, and 32mm is a bit of a pain to get hold of. The 30mm x 1.5mm ERW tube I found is roughly half the price of 25mm conduit. Probably much cheaper than 32mm. Never seen any to compare :stuck_out_tongue:

As per the other thread, my LR4 is essentially going to need a full refurb this spring. Winter has not been kind. I also didn’t build it particularly well in the first place. So more than happy for any/all of the parts to be re-used in this build - I have five V1E spec motors new in box on the shelf ready to replace the underspec and now a bit worse for wear motors on the machine also. Happy to procure/manufacture rail, strut plates, printed parts etc. And can probably dig up a carpenter to pre build a table. If I built it it’d be catastrophically wonky…

Assembly wise, hopefully my company will be in our bigger workshop by then, so we could build it there. Otherwise there’s space at Nottinghack  (can’t help with anything closer to manchester!) We don’t yet have space to potentially home the machine we’ll build - we need to finish a currently underway reshuffle (that’s now stalled because the landlord is stalling on fixing the one lift in the building) first but (big) if we manage it in time I’m sure we’d love to.

For planning purposes, the bay in my van is 1600mm wide (1250mm between the arches) and 2255mm long. (Yes, I am consistently annoyed that it’s not quite long enough for an 8 x 4 ft full sheet!) Wouldn’t be adverse to borrowing / hiring a LWB if we felt it would be more useful.

I don’t have any ryobi stuff but still happy to bring a big battery pack if it would be of use.

Nottingham Hackspace is most lively on a Wednesday night, FWIW

I have just thought. I have a whole bunch of addressable LED tape I’d been meaning to bedazzle Ratrider with … perhaps we can find time to add that to the machine. Flashy lights are a good way to attract attention :stuck_out_tongue:

Related to the current RMRRF discussion - how many of my 10x 55ā€ displays might it be useful to bring? Cased for travel already…

Hell, maybe I should dig the video wall out the back of the unit…

32GALV | 32mm Galvanised Class 4 Conduit Hot Dipped Galv 3.75mtr Length | 3.75m | Superlec Direct is what I used for my LR4. I’m happy to order/buy/donate for this project!
