Router choice for a noob

Almost finished printing the parts, but wondering what router to use. Would a variable speed be of any advantage? TIA

Variable speed if of great advantage. Without it, you can’t do “feeds and speeds” — you can only change “feeds.”

The Makita 700 series is a good choice, and since the nice Kobalt competitor to it did not get picked up by Kobalt as permanent part of their line up, the Makita is looking good. I think there are “clones” of it that are perhaps more affordable. Harbor Freight might be somewhere to look for such.

Speaking of the nice Kobalt router, here’s a link to a new one on eBay for only $79.

Since the Makita sells (new) for about $140 to $150, the Kobalt link is worth considering.

Per your recommendation, I ordered the kobalt. Thanks :+1: Another NOOB question… Will the controller, SKR PRO, control the router speed or do I need a separate speed controller??

Router speed is manually set on the router itself and can’t be controlled externally. To do that, you would need a spindle instead. But, in reality, it’s not a big deal. My Kobalt spends 90+% of it’s time at a dial setting of 1. Sometimes I might change the speed when doing a tool change but you’re hands on with the router then anyway.

Exactly what Jason Yeager said, with the only difference for me being that I usually only use the lowest speed setting of 1 when I am cutting acrylic or some type of plastic. Usually when I’m cutting plywood or MDF I’m running on the speed setting of 3, which corresponds to I think about 17,000 RPM, and sometimes I run on a speed setting of 4 or 5, depending on what material I’m cutting, my cutting speed, cutting depth, etc. You will need to access resources to figure out the proper speeds and feeds for a given material, and a given cutting bit. There are free resources available for this and paid resources. Right feeds and speeds are absolutely crucial to success. Run too slow and you’ll bind up and stall the machine. Run too fast and you’ll burn up the bit and ruin it.
