Rack 'n stack ideas to store panels/scraps on cart/shelving

Anyone have neat solution(s) for stacking and organizing misc sized panels/offcuts on adjustable metal wire shelving (e.g. 3’ w x 6’ h x 18" d )?

Internetz are full of plywood based rolling carts https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=scrap+storage+shelving%0ASCRAP+storage+cart, those look like nice sturdy projects. But, I’d like something faster, lighter, cheaper and easier to adapt/adjust. Space is limited, so trying to fit everything (mostly) on the shelving unit instead of make a separate dedicated scrap cart.

Current mess…

Currently thinking of using paracord or bungie-cord, and plywood frame/stringers strategically, rather than gratuitously (to reduce material cost/weight). For example…

Or mini 2’ deep A-frame within the cart’s bottom shelf for up to 3’ x 3’ capacity.

Ahhh, the ever-evolving problem. I am always thinking about this.

Just yesterday I wanted my metal separated into steel and aluminum; before that, I was proud of my wood, metal, and plastic organization. I had drawn up a storage bin sytem somewhere around here but I could not find it yesterday when I was motivated to clean it up.

That rolling rack looks like a great start, I have a bunch of the rolling NSF racks myself.

Initially was thinking about EMT, ply, 3D printed parts and GT2 belts. But then, thought about rope/paracord to save time/cost. Am still liking the idea of a CNC cut frame/structure zip-tied/emt-mount fastened to the metal shelving frame. Partially inspired by Bar’s rental van plywood+rope build…

Hoping some folks here figured out something neat that’s working for them?

I had drawn up a set of bins that were for standing the material up, each bin a different height, then along the back same thing but for longer material laying down and larger sheet stuff. 4’x2’ ish footprint. kinda push it into the corner and if I needed bigger stuff swing it out and open the garage door (I usually have it open when working anyway).

My biggest issue is wheels don’t like the gravel very much.

This is a problem I’m actively trying to solve but not quite certain what to do. I did get 4x 3" casters. I need to be able to store 2x4 feet sheets of plywood. If I could have ones a bit wider than that but overhang, that would be good. I’ve also got a collection of sheet goods around 1x2 feet. Then various scraps.

I’m probably just going to build a base out of 2x4s and plywood and wing something. Otherwise I’ll think about this for far too long.

I considered building something out of 1" EMT, but that was getting too expensive.

:100:

I picked up some rope and bungie cords for minimal tray base + ply + 1x4 saw horse + adjustable cord rigging/dividers, but… got distracted by other projects already…

:eye::eye::popcorn:

Just out of curiosity, how do you remove the 3x3 sheets from the cart in design 2? I feel like the top shelf is going to interfere in these cart based designs.

Yeah, those were fast AI concept “designs” thrown together to discover/broaden ideas. Currently planning to make a stock/panel organizer lipped tray with 1x4 A-frame, that’s deeper than the wire shelving rack. I’ll rarely need to access the 3x3 panels (or wider 4’ panels by leaving sides of the 3’ wide shelving open). Am thinking to access larger panels from the back side (shelving is rolling), and the smaller more frequently access panels will be access from the front, and, organized/separated with ply+cord.

Hopefully if I remain distracted long enough by other projects, someone will share something neat that’s working for them.
