Prusa MK3 TLC

I was given a used Original Prusa MK3 and I want to spin it up to give to someone who doesn’t know a lot about 3D printing. The bed is in rough shape and there are a few broken printed parts.

Any pointers on where I can go for documentation or where to gain some knowledge on it? I don’t have any manuals. I’m not sure which bits are stock or missing.

I don’t see anything missing. Off-brand beds will run $15 to $20 on Amazon. If you want to test it out, install Prusa slicer. Firmware upgrades, which you may want to do, are done through the slicer.

That helps a lot. Thank you.

Is there supposed to be a part on the output of the part cooling fan? It’s just blowing air an inch away from the nozzle right now.

There were two missing screws between the extruder cover and the extruder base. It looks like these parts are “B6”. It doesn’t look like any of the parts are broken. The screen is. I don’t think it is worth it to replace it for $65 from printed solid.

You are right. From the files at Phillipp’s link, you are looking for:

I would print it in ABS.

It also has a MMUv2. It looks like it hasn’t ever been used. But it has been shipped a couple of times (I am at keast the third owner and not the last for this machine).

I think that one is for the B7 version of the extruder body. There is a right angle version a little lower that I’m going to try.

The MMU2 wasn’t very great at the beginning but with the latest firmware upgrades it does work pretty well.
Also, the screen does not matter too much because you can control everything via Prusa Connect directly from the slicer. You can cancel specific prints etc all without touching the printer. I rarely have to acces it, only for changing the filament in the MMU, besides that, everything else is done via Connect.
I don’t know whether the MK3 has fewer options in there, but I actually doubt it.

Those are the version numbers and who printed them. The ones Prusa ships have different letters than the ones that are on printables, the number signifies the iteration.

I managed to clean the bed up a lot. I think it will actually be fine. It must have had glue stick or something on it. It came off kind of like paper mache.

I started a print. But the Z offset is way off. The calibration is all through the screen. So I ordered a cheap replacement that should be here Tuesday.

I also set up prusa link/prusa connect. It seems fine. But nothing near the capabilities of the screen. So I am going to have to wait.

EDITED - @jeffeb3 has prusa connect working!

Once you have Z calibrated, don’t forget you can live adjust Z as well, which was one of the cool features of that machine at the time.

Is that only available through the screen?

I use this feature on my klipper and marlin firmwares. It is clutch.

Yes only through the screen. Here’s the “manual” -

It’s crazy how quickly we forget stuff - the load cell first layer adjustment on the Mk4 is faultless and even though it’s only been a year, I had completely put all that manual adjustment stuff out of mind!

Sadly, I’m facing that at the moment with the LR3 “It’s only been a year” is like starting all over again!

Screen came early. Seems like a drop in replacement (it is a fysetc brand one).

Premade gcode works fine. Now I need to print from my own cut gcode. This should be smooth sailing now. Thanks for the help.

Nice, the bed also cleaned up really well.

Is that one of the original satin steel sheets, before they started powder coating them?

They seemed to be very versatile, I have a new one on the way but I think it’s like the textured sheet only less textured.

I find it interesting that Bambu have a textured powder coated sheet for PLA (and perhaps a few complaints about adhesion - it’s hard to tell with internet noise) and Prusa’s textured powder coat sheet comes with a warning not to use it with PLA because adhesion is problematic. The satin sheets seem to be a thing for all seasons.
