Powering Portable JackPot + Steppers using Dewalt batteries (or similar)

Curious if anyone’s powering portable devices built using JackPot + Steppers (or some electronically similar controller) using Dewalt batteries?

Am trying out this adapter, and a module to help protect battery from over discharging…

Was planning on 18650 batteries, but I may as well use the DeWalt ones on hand and have chargers setup for. Will ensure they’re doing light work within battery’s ampage/power spec.

Advice and suggestions appreciated, as well as seeing portable JackPot projects folks have hacked together?

With your recent posts, I’m really starting to wonder what on earth you’re working on?

@azab2c - I looked into this, but the problem was the DeWalt batteries have the BMS in the tool, so you can wreck the battery with over-discharge.

I have a portable adapter that I use with Ryobi batteries and these have the BMS in the batteries themselves. You can diode OR packs together and then swap batteries in a 2+ battery setup as you deplete them.

I haven’t used it to run a Jackpot but I have run a bunch of other stuff this way.

Wouldn’t the voltage protection module he’s suggesting prevent that from happening?

Test, test, test.
I have not tried that specific protection module, but several I did try would ‘shut off’ but still leak current at a few mA of draw. The net result of that is if you leave your no-BMS battery in a device that leaks current when off… you kill your batteries.

I ran my Zen off a battery pack for a while. The table was perfect worked for a long time, but as soon as I added the LED’s I killed a pack by going too low.

So, in addition to the low voltage protection module, it sounds like a mechanical switch or relay is warranted.

DeWalt adapter has a on/off switch. Appreciate the advice to test, test, test. Am checking as I go…

I love that you’ve made a cordless weed wacked with a fluidnc board inside.

So I have 4 ryobi nicad batteries in the garage, they need some new cells, but if you pay shipping, I could ship you 2, I will probably never get around to doing anything with them.

Once again, these are the older, larger, nicad ones, not the new lithium ones.

edit!!!, only if you are in the U.S., sorry, forgot the international aspect of the forum!
