Hi, I have a 12 volt power supply that I purchased but it has what looks like a suppressor near the end of the cable that is getting in the way. Do you think it would be ok if I cut the suppressor or whatever it is off.
Any help would be much appreciated.
This is a choke and is placed there to reduce EMI. It can safely be cut from the power supply, but it does serve a minor purpose so it can be left in place also. Here is an article that can do a better job of explaining that I can.
I believe that shape is normally meant to be a ferrite core that suppresses electrical ‘noise’ but if it’s like the power supply I bought, I cut that apart and it was nothing but plastic.
Robert and Paul thank you very much for your replies. I read the article, and although I now understand what it is and what it does, I think it will have to go, especially if like Paul found, it is only plastic and not what it is supposed to be.
Ferric plastic perhaps?..or a Chinese master plan to circumvent CE certification?..who knows?
