Anyone have any podcast recommendations? Whether that’s CNC or maker related, or something outside of that altogether. I like the idea of podcasts but have a hard time getting into them. So, I figured I’d ask a group where I have a lot of shared interests.
Tagging myself here as I’d be interested in some CNC/maker podcasts as well
Try Open Hardware Manufacturing Podcast. This episode is especially good! Ep. 8 - Ryan from V1 Engineering - OHM Podcast | Acast
Yep, I’ve seen that one. I feel like I’m not the target audience for most of the episodes though.
I’ve enjoyed some of the “history that doesn’t suck” podcasts. I haven’t listened to any technical or DIY podcasts at all, so that is also of interest to me as well.
I travel for work, so I do listen to several podcasts pretty regularly while flying, and while working in the shop. I haven’t settled on a maker podcast that consistently grabs my attention, but there are some one-off episodes like Ryan’s above. I’m watching for more suggestions for sure.
- Technology podcast: Accidental Tech Podcast - Three guys talking tech - Apple focused.
- Business/Tech podcast: Decoder (Vox media) - Nilay Patel - Interviews Tech Executives on current topics.
- History Podcast: The Rest is History - This is a history podcast for dads over 40. 2 British historians discussing historical events. There are a lot of interesting episodes and series in their library so this is a good one for working around the shop.
There are podcasts for every topic and within every topic, there are great to terrible ones.
Personally, I enjoy these:
- Lateral podcast (with Tom Scott, who we saw at Open Sauce and said the sand table was “Lovely”, but otherwise not related to V1). It has a lot of the maker type personalities and they worl their way through impossible trivia questions. You have to listen (or watch the highlights on youtube) to get it.
- Radiolab. This is science reporting at its best. They have interesting stories although a lot of the newer ones are repeats of the awesome older ones.
- Freakonomocs Radio. This is loosely about deep dives on economic or social topics. But they like to look at a topic you might know and then look at some of the statistics that contradict your primary assumptions. The earlier episodes were the best, but they still have an occasional great show.
- This American Life. This is just good story telling. That’s about the only theme.
I also listen to Planet Money, Ted Radio Hour, and Fresh Air. But those are more acquired tastes, IMHO.
I’ve been thinking about creating such a topic for a long time now! @jeffeb3 said somewhere that he didn’t want to go into podcast recommendations, because things would quickly get biased and political. A sentiment I can support. But we are good at being polite, so why not share out non-political preferences!
My favorite geeky podcast is Hackaday Sometimes it’s too technical for my understanding, but I really like listening to full time geeks going about.
I also listen to JB Broadcastings “Self-hosted” and “Linux unplugged”. They can also get a little too technical, but it’s nice ambience when biking…
I miss a good maker-oriented podcast, that aims on the cross-section between technical, maker-related and crafting topics. Perhaps Tom Scott is a good contestant for this?
A great one I used to listen to was Simon Mayo and Mark Kermode’s Wittertainment. It’s a film review programme/podcast that has been going for years. I should try listening again.
I tried getting back into podcasts recently, the hilarious, cringy, My Dad Wrote A Porno was just ruined by all the adverts. I tried a few others but it was just so many ads. In the UK we are spoiled with ad free radio from the BBC and it’s hard to beat. If you’re ok with ads, I think its a good fun.
I don’t have a maker related podcast to recommend, but am enjoying the suggestions.
Two I like are
Cautionary Tales by Tim Harford
Hidden Brain by Shankar Vedantam
You’re very lucky.
Sadly, it takes a VPN and some work for US listeners to try and enjoy BBC content.
If the BBC made it easier for a US listener to pay the license and partake, I’d do it.
The BBC Radio and podcast app is called “BBC Sounds” in the app store BBC Sounds - Podcasts. Apparently you don’t need a UK TV license nor need to be in the UK to use it. Might be worth a go.
