Planning out enclosure and wiring - gut check on plan

I usually just use a indicator lamp, or a resistor in the Megohm range. All the load is for is to let the Zero cross detector in the SSR fire, then it is off.

Then the post that gave you that hint should be marked as the solution, please. :slightly_smiling_face:

Fixed…thanks for the correction!

To this end, here’s the current state of the box, prior to wiring up the steppers:

All mains voltage terminals now fully covered, and require additional steps beyond opening the box to access. Note that the extra spicy side of the SSR is duly labeled as an additional reminder.

Am I the only one who feels like getting the wiring finished is the longest part of the build?

I mean, I’m aware at this point that much of the friction around wiring is self-inflicted, including the fact that I just discovered that my stepper cables are just shy of being long enough to make it to my enclosure (owing to the fact that I opted to max out my build area).

But I feel like every time I make a step toward completion I get another 50% towards done. And then another 50% from there, etc. And never get quite to the finish line.

Just griping, because I’m not looking forward to splicing that many wires. But I had already bought 4-wire connector pigtails for the steppers, so that’s really the right way to wire them up to the box, even if it is a lot more work than just passing the ribbon cables in and plugging them in directly.

It is nice to finally have the drag chains installed, at least.

Yeah, wiring is quite the bugaboo.

I really like neat witing harnesses, but never end up making them. I leave wires too long, for fear of them being too short if I change something, and the result always looks bad, though it works.

I used to do competition car audio, and that was a big problem there, too. I’d leave long wires, and at least I’d hide them somewhere, but often the wiring wasn’t neat enough and I’d lose points there.

My crop of machines is kind of the same. Even a piece like the Zen tables, I have kind of a mess of wire underneath, sort of straightened up with a nightmare of zip ties.

@SupraGuy I’m sure I will be much happier when it’s all done and tidy…just grumpy with the current state.

I had no idea that was even a thing. I’ve always done my own head unit changeouts (though I do leverage Crutchfield to make things a little easier on myself), and the two things that always kill me are the mic for hands-free, since it seems like no aftermarket head unit can integrate with the OEM mic, and the USB. My most recent replacement, in my 2016 CR-V did actually integrate with one of my OEM USB ports (although Crutchfield claimed otherwise), but the other port from the head unit is just dangling under the dash, which is nasty. Might have to see if I can find a place to put a faceplate and model something up in F360.

It felt like it was the only thing during the late 80s and early 90s here in central Ontario. It largely died out as OEM systems got both better and harder to integrate with. Still around, but maybe 5% of the scale.
