Planning a winter shop project without rushing it

I have been thinking about how to plan a winter shop project so it stays enjoyable from start to finish. In the past I have jumped in with a big idea and then felt pressed for time once the days got shorter. This winter I want to break the work into small, relaxed steps and leave room for the usual surprises along the way. I also want to keep the pace gentle enough that I can still enjoy tinkering on cold evenings. How do you pace a winter project so it stays fun instead of turning into a race to finish?

Chunking or phasing. Build some partial completion points into the plan so you can step back, take credit for completing a step/phase/chunk, and look ahead to see if you want to make adjustments to the goal, the scope, or the timeline. These built in gaps also allow you to slip in a side project where needed.

My philosophy is baby steps. Any progress is a win, constant progress is ideal, baby steps or giant leaps, just keep it moving.

I struggle with this. I very much enjoy the “journey” but most of my projects are things I want and that means I want them NOW and have to force myself to slow down. It doesn’t help that my wife is very much a rush in and just get it done mindset while I’m a plan it out and do it right - just be ready to adapt mindset. So she’s usually pressuring me to get projects done quicker because she’s tried of waiting on them and would rather have them done with some mistakes than perfect and a few days / weeks later.

But at the same time - I can also get bored and just walk away from a project if it takes too long. I tend to get them far enough they’re usable…then just live with them instead of doing the final steps to bring them to what I picture as “finished” in my head.

I tend to have a much easier time with projects for someone else. Then my mind can deal with setting a deadline and dividing it into steps to make sure I get there without being overwhelmed…but at the same time it tends to suck the enjoyment out of the project.

So - overall I just kind of live with my projects either being rushed to please my wife, or always being about 90% done and having “Just a little more fine tuning” I can tinker on when the mood strikes
