I asked my parents for wood again this Christmas, so: off to Cropp-Timber. I had set by heart on Osage Orange, but it was sold out, so I settled for Satinwood (rather yellow than orange) and I really wanted something red, so I opted for Red Heart. I also wanted another board of pear.
Long story short: I got satinwood, a little piece, for 120€, Red Heart, a little less expensive, for 77€ and the whole load of other wood, including cherry, a little piece of 2200-year-old oak that had been submerged in the Elbe, Honey Locust, servicetree, Horse chestnut, Sapeli pommelé Mahogany and a few others that weren’t in the description for 150€. It was the best deal I have ever made, seriously. The wood is not great if you need the whole slabs, having some impurities etc. but for me doing inlays and boxes it is great.
I am still giddy, four hours later. We brought it into the shop just now and it looks even more than in the car. So much cherry, 4 boards. Only those would have justified the price. And I cut little pieces of the satinwood and the red heart and gave them a quick oiling, the satinwood really is yellow. Woo! The red heart turns really dark red, but still gorgeous. I think it’s time for my Mononoke inlay.
I also considered making cocktail smokers out of the bog oak. I mean, a product like this sells to pretentious people (I a have no idea and am poking fun, so don’t hit me!) so using 2200-year-old wood caters to those, right? Slap a hefty pricetag on it and I am good to go.
