Edit: They just started moving the astronauts’ sleeping locations on the ISS due to the solar storm.
Edit 2: Flared up again even better, quite visible to the naked eye ~22:00 local time here in Colorado. Spanned the entire horizon to the north. Extra light is moonrise.

Whenever I hear on the news about an unusual night sky event like this or the meteor showers I can’t help thinking about the start of Day of the Triffids…
It was overcast in my area yesterday so I saw nothing. But, here’s a picture, taken by a family member, from the south shore of Lake Ontario near St. Catharines on October 10th last year.
It was very visible here is Minnesota. I did not get any pictures but it is forecasted to be strong again tonight so I may drive away from the city lights to get a better view.
