So I am about to build my table and LR2. I am buying the Dewalt DWP611 and curious what router bits, collets, etc one should have to get started? Something like a starter set/kit. I saw this video on YouTube, what are your thoughts on his recommendations?
In my (relatively short) time using my CNC machine, I’ve come to two conclusions about router bits:
Almost all jobs can be accomplished with just a few general purpose router bits.
Given any specific job and/or material, there is almost always a router bit that does the job better than a general purpose bit (usually costing $$$).
Making certain assumptions based on your router choice and your machine (LR), I would recommend as general purpose bits:
A decent quality, 1/4" shank, two flute, upcut straight end mill router bit.
A decent quality, 1/4" shank, two flute, upcut ball end mill router bit.
A decent quality, 1/4" shank 1/2" or greater in diameter 60 degree V-bit
If you plan on doing finer work using smaller diameter router bits, you will need a 1/8" collet for your router and a version of the first two bits with a 1/8" shank. Ryan sells the collet for the DWP611 in his store.
But you may be approaching this question backwards. If tell us what you will primarily be making with your machine, or give us the list of the first several project you plan for your machine, then folks on the forum can give you a recommendations for router bits that are targeted to those specific projects.
There is a multi bit pack in the store for 1/8" bits that would go a long way for getting started.
I ate a few bits getting started out (I skipped foam) so if you can’t wait to make chips in wood having a cheap bulk pack of simple single flute upcuts never hurts for the $1/pc-ish cost you can find them for.
I started with cheapo 1/8" compression bits to learn with and then added higher quality bits as I needed them. I work exclusively in wood products at the moment and the Whiteside RU2100 1/4" Upcut has been my go to for most projects. Midrange price, available on Amazon Prime, and cuts wood like butter.
