I just stumbled over this build in the instructables newsletter (https://www.instructables.com/ESP32-Powered-Tabletop-Kinetic-Sand-Drawing-Robot/), he says he wrote the software from scratch and is using an ESP as well. Maybe it is something new/helpful.
