Need Help with X-Axis Laser Setup (3018 + 4W Laser)

Hello again, I’m back here asking the community for some advice.

I already have the structure assembled, but I don’t want to configure it in a cross (gantry) style. It’s intended for use on the X axis and to work with a 4W, 12V laser using a 3018 control board.

I’m currently stuck on the X axis, specifically with the laser movement. I’m not sure what component or part I can use to mount the laser module, considering the working area is 500 x 600 mm and I will be using a NEMA 17 motor (model 3401). The idea is to avoid moving too much weight.

What would you recommend for this purpose?

Thank you.

That’s the burly, it’s a very old model of the MPCNC, maybe you can find the instructions somewhere still.

What’s the resistance to using it as designed? I doubt you’re going to be able to save much weight in the moving parts if you stick with printed parts and conduit as the main structural elements.

To remove the cross-gantry approach you’d need to redesign the X axis, and then completely redesign the Y axis for whatever changes you make to the X structure.
You could try adding a second tube above and parallel to the existing one and using a stepper and belt to move X, and then you’ll still need to come up with a whole new Z mechanism or adapt another existing one.
