Mrrf 2020

Man, i feel bad putting food in ANY of my beer. They like to put that orange on the blue moon, maybe I’m just a little too low-brow to get it. But Modelo isn’t particularly heavy and just tastes…well, I was going to say better, but it TASTES, lol.
As for the parties, haven’t had many of those lately, but it was an unspoken rule back home that you NEVER complain about a beer selection. Temperature, ok. But drink it or don’t. And trade a coozie with someone, lol.

I am not picky at all, the only beer I do not like are Belgian’s for whatever for me they taste like burnt rubber. Must be genetic. My local bar had a smash hit and I returned my first beer ever saying it was funky…turns out there is just something in there that I can’t stomach?? I actually prefer to have a really nice beer then stick to light stuff. My days of hangovers are behind me (I hope).

Modelo negra with a lime is even better if there is an option.

CNCTestKitchen is out, mrrf says they will have a decision by next Friday, E3D is out.

Can you eat cilantro? It tastes like soap for some people.

Yup love it. No Brussle sprouts, they taste like doo doo. We did a test in one of my classes, that is genetic for sure, I even bought some of the test strips since peoples reactions are funny (they either taste like plain paper or poop, strong poop).

That may make it possible for me to make it also

So I guess nobody from Germany will be there…

I’m a bit surprized to see the pics of MRRF, I was imagining it to be some kind of giant event, but it looks a bit like something organized quickly in a barn. The size of the hall seems surprizingly small.
Do you already know where your spot will be? If it’s close to a wall then its clearly better, you could put a baneer, some lights, a shelf to display stuff… Make something that catches the eye since most of the other booths are actually just boring tables so you can’t see anything unless you’re very cose to them. Basically the only thing I can see on the pictures are various people’s heads and some delta printers XD

As for why medias and gvt seem to be panicking about the virus thing, there are a few really good reasons, probably the one that makes the most sense being that around 15-20% of people who catch it need to go into intensive care, which means using respiratory machines. By that, I mean that these people can not breathe by themselves at all, they need to be physically connected to a machine to get oxygen into their blood, otherwise they’d die rather quick.
That kind of percentage can quickly overload the health system of any country, even the best ones. Even China had a hard time to cope with it while being one of the best equipped countries in the world regarding health care, with loads of high tech machines, huge number of medical staff and all the necessary tools to produce everything they need. That’s basically not the case for any country of the rest of the world.

For example, in France, which is amongst the most advanced health care systems too, we have around 5000 spots of intensive care. And that’s the total figure, some people already need these spots for other reasons than the virus too, I don’t know how much are currently already occupied. You can imagine that this can be saturated very, very quickly. Italy, which has less capacity, started saturating at around 9000 cases…

So yeah, this 2% or so death rate is very dependant of how much the healh system can absorb and how many people are getting infected in the first place, at some point it gets saturated and you just can’t treat people. For instance, as of today, the death rate in Italy seems to have jumped to around 6.5%…
Also, as someone said earlier, pneumonia is no joke, you often get big long term consequences on your health after catching that even if you technically recovered.

Can’t say if MRRF will be cancelled, USA governance is insanely weird on this emergency crisis management situation, but if they ever decide to start taking things seriously like China did, you can expect to get a lot of events of this kind cancelled for a while. You should also ask yourself if the risks for yourself worthes it, don’t just wait for your government to decide for yourself. If you still can, you should purchase a few face masks, disinfectant and stuff like that (in reasonable quantities of course, don’t be an asshole) they will be hard to get soon. It’s unlikely Trump will take measures unless he’s completely forced to do so because he’d sacrifice anything to protect his precious economy figures, but he might have no other move at some point so be prepared.

I’m honestly happy to be in China right now, they went into great lenghts to protect people from the spread and so far it seems like it pays off.

I vouch for a mass video-conference, where Ryan can release his new version online, and we can all cheer together.

This is a really helpful article with lots of good numbers in it:

“Around 20% of cases require hospitalization, 5% of cases require the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and around 1% require very intensive help, with items such as ventilators or ECMO (extra-corporeal oxygenation).”

“The problem is that items such as ventilators and ECMO can’t be produced or bought easily. A few years ago, the US had a total of 250 ECMO machines, for example.”

So only 1% of cases need a ventilator, but there are not that many to share.

There aren’t enough for health care workers to use, so they should all be going to them, or people they give them to. They have to go into exposure to save lives, so we shouldn’t be using them to go to the store. Just my $0.02. IDK if it matters at this point, since all the ones the hospitals can use are being bought by hospitals.

Accurate, it can get super congested and it is super small compared to it’s impact on the 3D printing world. The first time I went I took a lap or two and thought…I flew out here for this. Then it got really packed and I started to get stuck at tables in the crowd and started talking to the random people…wow. Everyone had such cool projects or stories about the machines. On the surface it isn’t much but with a little deeper digging it is amazing. I guess a cool way to illustrate that is I have always had the cnc drawing, I think Ron did as well that first time, You can hear people walk by and say things like “that is overbuilt for a plotter” for the ones that have never seen it or heard of it they just walk by uninterested at the giant plotter.

Not all previous years, you never even knew when the doors would open to rush in and claim a spot. The year of the Tom interview Ron grabbed the best spot ever, wall/corner. We had room to breathe and talk to people. Last year we were crammed in the worst spot ever and it was hard to have conversations as people wanted to squeeze by. This year was supposed to be very different…

This is the exact beer https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/180/1385/ That had the nasty taste really bad, since that one I can taste it in other beers as well, even https://hoegaarden.com/ is a no go from me. I like everything else I have ever tried though…such a bummer to lose out on a category like that, trust me I keep trying to like them again.

Maybe we could come up with something fun…and we can all have a reason to stay home and away from the crowds building new machines!!!

Personally, back when I was drinking beers and putting on airs, I really liked Chimay Trappist ales.

Disclaimer: I effectively quit drinking decades ago. Occasionally, I’ll finish off a beer that the wife used in cooking, or maybe sip on one while tending a summer grill. Years of binge drinking, poor judgement, and all around irresponsible consumption habits (not to mention a familial weakness for addictions) led me to realize that I was better off watching other people drink than drinking.

That is beginning to be much more fun for me. Even at my age people still do dumb things after a couple…

I have found that even one beer completely kills my will power, and encourages more tv and less hobbies. I still have one if I’m out with friends, but at home, I have one maybe 1/month now.

Yeah…having one at lunch would absolutely kill my productivity. Do not tell my younger self that I have become such a lightweight. On vacation though a steady supply keeps me from trying to get things done and just relax!

Man, some things I just really LIKE with a beer. Good sandwiches, for one. Generally, I limit myself to 2 just because the marginal enjoyment goes down. The 1st is great, the 2nd really good, but usually the 3rd is just another beer. Maybe I’m lucky that they don’t mess with me too much, but sometimes they even help me to get things done. My mind doesn’t wander so much and I don’t get so impatient. Rum and coke, now…that can make me stupid.
