Millling/Sanding cast iron pan with MPCNC

I’ve wanted to sand down a lodge cast iron pan for ages. I’ve seen loads of great results on YouTube and it looks like fun to cook with. But the dust from that process massively puts me off.

Consider this thread a brainstorm for the cast iron lovers on the forum (I’m sure there are some!).

  • I don’t think I could get RPMS down to a reasonable speed to mill cast iron
  • But thought I could find a sanding attachment for the router/gantry that could hands off sand it down for my in a programmed way while im nice and far away.

Would love to hear your thoughts!

Generating a tool path will be one challenge.

Having a suitable tool in the router will be another.

Having adequate clearance to reach all of the inside edges full height will be another.

I have to ask- why not a simpler direct approach? For example, look for a local makerspace that has a media blaster where you can put the pan in, spend 15 minutes media blasting it, then take it home to season it…

What is the condition of the cast iron? Could vary from completely rusted, to just some slight flaking of seasoning. I’d approach it different depending on the condition. Been using cast iron solely for a couple years to cook, piece of cake once you learn a few simple tricks.

I accidentally melted a spatula into my roommates cast iron pan and he put it in the oven on a clean cycle. It came out looking very clean. He then seasoned it again and I had a lot of apologizing to do.

Sanding with a cnc is probably not a good idea.
