Mechanical Wings

I’ve been working on this for the last few weeks - aluminium parts cut with the Alex’s BruteCNC the wings were supposed to be cut out with the Lowrider3, then sandblasted…

They’re for a dance performance in the next month - I’m hoping there is some professional footage from there.

Unfortunately it wasn’t my week and my Lowrider needs some maintenance, and the air compressor I inherited blew a seal so instead I just marked them out with a sharpie attached to the Lowrider and a sharpie, then used an angle grinder to shape the wings, a scalpel to cut the pattern and then manually sanded it with sandpaper trying not to disturb the edges.

Quite happy with it. - So is my friend who told me he’s ‘been living for the moment he gets to wear superhero wings’

I’m terrible at documenting stuff so the video footage is really bad, and I only have two photos taken with my potato cell phone.

The straps and buckles are REALLY nice too - I have some photos that I’ll try find later.

They consist of two linear actuators, 2 geared motors, 4 brushed ESC controller, 8x AA Batteries, and a 5000mA 7.4v LiPo battery.

They’re controlled with an RC Remote - it’s a bit tricky to use, there’s definitely a knack to it, and a learning curve.

I’m very interested to see how they are going to be used in the performance. - wearing them does very interesting things to weight distribution, especially when the open/close/pivot

Wow, I can only imagine the work that went into those. Be proud, that is a hell of a project!

My partner made the fabric straps (dyed cotton, backed with the nylon strap stuff.) Obviously way better at documenting their work than I am.

The fittings are made on the BruteCNC which I’m over the moon with.

I haven’t even scored the fixture plate yet - most parts come out cleanly cut through to the protective plastic, one of two have left a skin which can be removed with a stanley knife.

There are no clasps…We figured it was better to screw/lock the person in.

Very good idea, in case of a fire you can immediately identify the body.
