Makita RT0701C without a 1/8 collet

What’s up People!

Quick question guys, so I’m about to start my build for a LR3: Would you like me to do a tutorial about it? But this is not my actual question eheh

So I got a Makita RT0701C for a fair price of 70$CAD. While reading the forum, just realized that the Makita doesn’t have a 1/8 collet which seems to be use by a lot of bits. That being said, would you say I can start my journey with a 1/4 without any problem really? Like when will I get frustrated with the 1/4 bits?

Looking for some knowledge right here!

@DougJoseph I’ve watch your video about the full size table. Except the fact that you would have done the base more wider to fit a full 4x8 sheet underneath it, do you have some recommendations for your workbench that you would do differently?

Yes, my order is already shipped and didn’t add one… just wondering if I can do a lot with 1/4 or are they quite limited.

I can’t really think of anything else, except maybe this minor thing. I often attach material for CNC work by simply screwing it down to the table. In my old table (before the new torsion box), I had a layer of OSB covered by a layer of MDF. I liked how the screws bit into the OSB. It could be just my imagination. :slight_smile: In my current setup, the issue with emulating that is that OSB only comes in 48"x96" while the MDF comes in 49"x97" so the bottom layer would have been slightly smaller than the upper layer. So I just went with MDF + MDF instead of OSB + MDF.

So, 1/4" bits are stronger and better except for detail work. They cannot form an inside corner with a radius any tighter than the bit’s diameter. 1/8" can do twice as tight an inside corner. Some projects it makes no difference. Some, noticeable difference!

Have you ever consider T-Slot table? Not that I have experience with it but seems commonly use within the CNC world.

I’ve been using 1/4" shank endmills for months now, many with 1/8" cutting size. The trick will be to buy the bits that will work with your collet.

Also, when I started with my Primo, I used the same Makita router, and got a 1/4 to 1/8" asapter that worked well. probably added some runout, but not much, and it worked until I got a proper 1/8" collet. (I still have the adapter, too.)

So it will work, you just need the bits to go in the router.

Pretty sure these are what I got used so I could.use the end mills I bought from V1

I’ve got both and use the 6mm fora lot of hardwood, 3.175 for plywood. I would definitely get the collet. Also, the smaller endmills are a lot cheaper.

My Katsu packed with 6/8/10 mm & bought myself a 1/8 (3.75) and 3mm collet afterwards.
So you will be able to find them if needed.

I may do something like that at some point… Right now I’ve just taken a path that worked and has not had a lot of issues.
