Mag drill on a Low Rider?

I want to (accurately) drill a bunch of holes in my 8’x4’ welding table to accept fixturing tools. I have a mag drill.

I have considered making a one off build to move it around, then it occurred to me that I’m probably going to build a low rider anyway.

Considerations:

  • The drill doesn’t have to be lifted. I will probably just put it on some spring loaded Omni directional rollers. The drill is still bloody heavy though.
  • I’m not looking for speed. Like at all. It can crawl for all I care. Anything to avoid manually drilling a bazillion holes.
  • I’m not worried about automating the drill on/ off - that’s just a relay.
  • I’ll have to build something to raise and lower the quill.

Is this a crazy / stupid / untenable idea?

I think it would be easier just to use the CNC to make a template. That said, drilling in steel takes a long time moving between holes would be the exciting part for sure.

mag drills are impressively fast at pumping through steel!

but yes i agree that some sort of cnc cut template for the drilling would be my direction. maybe a grid of holes to accept a centre punch.
