LR4 parts advice - Calgary, Alberta, Canada

Looking to build my first CNC and looking for some advice about the parts and where others have sourced them. I recently made multi-layered print, 60" x 30" ,using foam and cardstock and found the cutting part taking too much time and not being as clean as I would like it. I fell down a rabbit hole and have decided to build the LR4 (8’ x 4’) and use a drag knife to do my cutting. I have some parts from a previous project and some scrap metal from work and was wondering if I could use it for the LR4, any advice would be appreciated.

Mostly just using it to cut cardstock and foamboards though I would like to use it for woodworking and the other fun CNC stuff. Ive read that using lasers is possible for foam but I’ll have to explore further. Trying to keep cost down.

Rails: Got some 10ft steel tubes but they only have a 25.4 mm OD (1") and is 3 mm thick. From other threads it seems like I should use a proper 1" emt conduit. What about the rail for the Y rail, can I use this tubing and adjust?

XZ Plates: 0.2 mm thick steel kind of rough on both sides. Not sure how flat it needs to be. I have access to some basic hand tools and welding machine.

Control board: Any inexpensive options recommendations? Jackpot, SKR, Makerbase MKS DLC32? Not sure how tariffs would affect Jackpot cost

Stepper motor: Nema 17 0.42N.m 1.7a 2 phase 24 mm shaft. Is the holding torque sufficient?

If anyone has recently purchased parts for the LR4, any suggestions to where to source the belt, linear rails, and other specialty parts?

I’d buy them here: LowRider Parts – V1 Engineering Inc :stuck_out_tongue: If you wait a bit, there is going to be an international kit in two weeks (or a bit further out).

The tubes are not going to work, neither on X nor Y, the 0.2mm steel is too thin I guess. Jackpot is a good board and can also be ordered from Elecrow officially.

I got a lot of my bits and belts from AliExpress but you really have to dig to find the good deals there. And then of course you wait for shipping. Steppers I just got from the Amazon - after clicking any of Ryan’s links first so that he gets affiliate bonuses - it stores a cookie so anything you buy, even if not from his direct link should kick a little back to him (I think).

Ohh Ill wait a bit to see when his international kit comes out. In the mean time Ill just source it out locally and on aliexpress just to see.

You can get most everything at Spool3d just off Deerfoot in the Southeast.

But I would still recommend getting at least the jackpot, steppers, limit switches, rails and extension cables. The big reason is they designed to fit and Ryan deserves to get paid for his work so its important to support the store. I don’t get everything just because I like having a printer shop 10 minutes from home and their house brand of filament is pretty good.
