I have been running my MPCNC for a while now and I am thinking about upgrading my stepper motors for better performance. Right now…, I am using the standard NEMA 17s that came with my setup but I have noticed some skipped steps when cutting harder materials.
What’s the best NEMA 17 motor upgrade for more torque without overheating: ??
Would switching to NEMA 23s be worth it, or would that require too many modifications: ??
Any recommended brands or specs that have worked well for you: ??
I mainly cut wood and some aluminum so I am looking for a balance between power and precision. Any insights from those who’ve done upgrades would be much appreciated !!
The steppers recommended by Ryan are completely sufficient. You can see the feeds and speeds we are cutting with them, you can see that they can lift a 12kg gantry of a LR4 easily without skipping steps etc. So if you have skipped steps, the problem lies somewhere else.
Nema 23s are not worth it, and they are too much of a hassle to fit.
This falls under the category of user error (I don’t mean this the bad way) not all materials cuts the same. You cant brute force cuts on a diy cnc, mpcnc, openbuilds design etc. you will always have limitations. Better cam (wich you can get with proper testing) is the answer
It is just some time ago, that I have started to realize adapter for Primo for Nema 23 stepper motor.
Here an adapter for z-axis.
If you are interested, I can send you the FreeCad files.
