Looking for an advice about steel bars

Hi All,

I didn’t really know where to put this, so ended up here

I’m tiding up my garage and have found very old steel bars. I thought they are worth something, but was told they are worth whatever they weight as a scrap. So what do you think? Is the idea of being super heavy “material holder” or “glue pusher” enough to keep them around? I have probably like 10 of those each around 80-100cm long and they weight A LOT.

Any other use for them you think?

Don’t know about where you are, but where I am, uPVC has just overtaken steel in per ton scrap prices. Yes, as in plastic window frames.

So they’ll probably be worth very little in scrap, too, so if you can find any other use for them I’d do that!

How old? If it’s pre-wwII then there may be special interest in it…if you happen to find someone building a particle accelerator or other highly specialized device that requires low background steel:

But even if it is I have no idea how to go about finding a buyer since it’s so specialized.

If they are flat and true I’d be the sort to keep them around for establishing “known flat” surfaces for building things. And yes - as weight for glue “clamping”.

I’m also a pack rat - to a fault. Marie Kondo would have a nervous breakdown listening to the rationale I have for a lot of the stuff I keep around.

They are at least 40 years old. I like the idea of flat surface, but then I’m not sure how flat they are. They also have a bit of rust on them, so probably would have to work on them a bit for that use… I guess this kind of flat if flat enough for a woodworker, right?

Saying that I’ve bought myself DIN 875/1 (last minute decided that /0 is an overkill) metalworking square “just to be sure”

Any situation that results in the acquisition of a new tool is a good one!
