Layer shift in core

Printed the last piece for my MPCNC this weekend, the core. I noticed that there are two slight layer shifts in the first quarter of the print. Using calipers, it appears to be <1 mm. Is this likely to be an issue in my build?

I did print with variable infill, but the changes did not happen in the region where the infill changed. I haven’t had issues with layer shifting in other prints (Prusa MK3S) so not sure what might have happened. Have had one suggestion to slow down the print speed, that is, if I need to re-print the core.

@Ryan , what is your pro oppinion?

Ouch, that sucks since it appears the shift encompasses the lower set of bolt holes. So I think the part is not useable and needs a reprint. Layer shifts can be tough to solve. I bashed my head against the wall over layer shift for the better half of a year, trying all the usual fixes. Turned out to be a very intermittent motor connector at the controller board, doh lol!

I know this doesn’t help much, but I’d say at least make sure everything else is ok before traveling down the road of tweaking your tune.

Edit… that shift does appear to be in the exact opposite direction. That goes along with a bad connector. My rig was only shifting in y… randomly, but never X or Z. It was a bad y connector.

An intermittent wire can also be caused by thermal expansion, which would only happen after a little bit of time, which might explain why it only happened on a longer print.

If you have TMC drivers, you can sometimes catch a warning flag with M122. And also check them for reduced current due to over temp warnings.

Those bottom holes grab the bottom of the Z rails, so if they are shifted I think it means your Z will not be square to XY.

It is small enough you might not notice most of the time, but for me I would hate being in a situation where I’m constantly wondering if the layer shift is degrading the quality. I would almost rather not know.

I’ve got it printing again, slowed the speed down to 75% and so far it looks good, has gotten past the first layer shift point, though I suspect the location is completely random. Fingers crossed, should finish sometime tomorrow morning.

My vote as well.

It will be worth it.

Finished re-printing at 75% speed and all is good. Though I misjudged how much filament I had left on the roll, and turns out I had no more red PETG, so I have a two-tone core. We’ll just say I was being artistic!

I like it!

That actually looks really good, and the red/black scheme fits with a lot of V1 stuff anyway.
