Just completed build, first startup no movement

I just finished my first build and powered it up, I am using a jackpot. All the LEDs are on at the endstop locations. I get no movement at all when tapping the various manual movement rings in the UI. Any thoughts?

Few things to help diagnose:

  • take a clear picture of your board and post/link it
  • With power applied do the steppers turn freely or are they ‘locked’
  • Take a screenshot of your UI and post it (does it say Alarm on it?)
  • Press each endstop, can you see the matching LED on the board go off?
  • Where did you source your steppers?
  • What config.yaml are you using? Did you upload it yourself or did it come preloaded?
  • From the console tab in the UI type $ss (show startup messages) copy and paste the results here (use the preformatted text markup)

@Dreyfus Thank you for the guidance.

See pictures below.

-Steppers are locked when powered

-All equipment came from V1 Engineering

-Endstop LEDs go off when endstop is triggered

-I believe the config.yaml came preloaded on the jackpot board from V1 at purchase

-There does appear to be an alarm icon active on the UI

-not sure I got the instruction correct regarding the startup message from the console tab, (it is the last screenshot).

Thanks for the assistance!

first thing: turn off your machine right now.

The stepper drivers need heat sinks - these are the metal cubes with sticky back pads. Put on one each stepper driver making sure they don’t touch the tops of the the headers along each side.

without heat sinks the steppers will overheat (funny enough) and best case go into thermal shutdown, worst case get damaged.

Then power back on, refresh the UI

On the reports tab, checking the auto button and then run $SS again - the console looks like it’s not connected in your screenshot.

The steppers won’t jog when the machine’s in an alarm state, click on the alarm bell and then ‘clear alarm’. Try to move using the jog buttons once it’s cleared.

@Dreyfus Thanks for the pro-tip on the heatsinks, I do not believe that is in the documentation. I figured the other issue out and I am up and running now. Thanks!

Out of curiosity, what was the other issue? We like to take notes because that might help troubleshoot someone else’ build at some point.

Congratulations of getting to an up-and-running state!

I had the y and z backwards on my ymax side. I am not sure why it was locked but once I switched them and rebooted it worked. Thanks again, onto squaring!
