Took a few tries! Cedar bled really bad! But rustoleum clear matte to the rescue!!! Just a couple coats and bam!

I love using cedar fence pickets. Relatively cheap for cedar and easy to cut! Downside, as you found out, really sucks up any kind of paint/finish.
