Is the LowRider a reliable for a small business

Hi everyone,

A bit of background on why I’m looking at a LowRider. I work from a small workshop, so I don’t have the space or budget for a large industrial 8×4 CNC, but I still need to be able to process full sheets of plywood.

I’m interested in hearing from people who have owned and used one for a while. Is it a reliable workhorse that you can depend on, or does it end up being more of a project that constantly needs tweaking and maintenance?

If you were running a small business and needed a machine you could rely on regularly, would you choose a LowRider again, or would you save up for something else?

I’d really appreciate any honest opinions from people with long-term experience.

I use it for my small business making trays, Adirondack chair parts, signs, etc. It may not be as fast as some other machines, but it is very capable. I have the means to get a “higher end” machine, but I will keep using my LR4. At this point, outside of speed, I can’t think of a reason to move up. I like that I can fix it easily and cheaply if it breaks.

Thanks, that’s really helpful to know. Out of curiosity, what sort of feed rates and spindle speeds are you running, and what’s your overall setup?

I have a 4x8 foot machine. Feeds and speeds depend on the bit and the material. I usually use what the bit manufacturer says, or I will follow Cutting It Close, IDC Woodcraft or Whitesides recommendations for their bits if the bits didn’t come with anything. From there, I will adjust as needed. Most of the times they are pretty dead on. On spindle speed, I have a Dewalt and I run it at the lowest speed always.

just over a year ago ,I new nothing about CNC , took the plunge due to life changes and built a LR4 1260 x 3000 cutting area

best move ever , I am now using it for my new business, doing cabinetry and timber slab tables etc

cabinetry is mainly 16mm veneer particle board , 18mm high grade acrylic veneer MDF for cabinet fronts

sure i had some teething problems , but that’s more to a brain injury than the lowrider itself, and the support on here is out the gate even when you ask dumb question and i asked a few :laughing: , don’t think you would get that any where else

The biggest factor I’ve found is high quality bits, make all the difference re good cuts squareness etc, not the LR itself

i consonantally run F1700mm/m DOC 6.2mm on 18mm high grade acrylic veneer MDF with a single flute down cut, i make sure my final pass is min .6mm-1mm deeper than material and i dont get chip out on bottom edge, and the acrylic chips real easy , compression bits would chip out for me, i just throw a 4mm mdf sheet under my material so i don’t care about going to deep, i do about 6 -10 sheets than replace it

particle board and 18mm ply around 1400 with same tool , which i reckon is due to glue in the products bindind

I just about to build a smaller LR4 so i can do V carve and 3D relief projects, at same time when I’m running full table

i use Mill Mage software, which i find great, but that’s my preference

this is a cabinet i just finished for a customer

I started my shop around the Lowrider2 era, yes you can get things dialed in, the most important thing is to know the limits of it and dont push things. I think you need to take your time and try to make things repeatable (your zeros), cad/cam get a workflow suits your needs (you dont need to take 6 hours to start or edit a current job)

Maintenance: it is important you get the machine to an optimal working condition, that includes regular z axis lubrication. Also to have a 3d printer available to change parts quickly if something is broken. Keep an eye con core slack so you adjust it

I still have around one of my 2 lowrider4, obviously i have been upgrading my shop to more serious cnc machines but they are mainly because i needed the stiffness to cut 18mm melamine in a single pass.

The lr4 is capable of making me fluted mdf panels, acp/acm work, plastics and all.

What would you say is the main limiting factor to not push things?

It comes down to the stiffness of the machine. 3D printed parts will flex more than metal parts. Sometimes that is good thing. The flex can save things if things go wrong. But if you need speed, you will want to go with a bigger machine. But if you are just starting out, the cost of entry with a LR4 is cheap enough that you can start with it then move to something bigger if you need calls for it.

As with everything, it depends. I’ve seen Ryan talking at shows with people who go on and on about how their $250,000 CNC router had automated infeed and outfeed, machine vision, etc- and how much better that is than a $800 LowRider.

My favorite response to that was “yeah, but you could build four LowRider tables for less that $5000, and put the remaining $245,000 I to other aspects of you business.”

The main thing to understand about a LowRider is that it gives machine capabilities that are 5-10 times its price category.

Extremely capable while extremely affordable.

Pretty much every issue I have run into with 4-5 bigger projects done is user error.

I would recommend starting a checklist anytime you run into an issue and check those before the start of each project - that way you’ll only make each mistake once :smiley:

that’s all solid advice

I currently run a fox alien 8080 ultra however the size of it leaves much to be desired

That’s the main reason it would be nice to have something bigger

(Also with the forums when I reply to one person does that notify just that one person and when I reply to the post does that notify all that typed lol sorry I don’t use them much)

As has been said: Flex. But you should know that you are running a less than 1k machine (all things considered) not a 12k machine.

Some times you need to invest for sure but invest wisely. You cannot have a +10k cnc router collecting dust while turned off. You must learn to grow your business.

I trust my LR4 with expensive materials that needs a lot of precision to not trash sheets. You can have everything dialed in. The most incredible addon i have for my lr is a simple vacuum table for Vrouting acm sheets, one plastic board+2 shopvacs running the vacuum inside a silencer box under the table. (I did reduce my z speeds significantly to not loosing steps: hot weather/really hot workshop) And i do a lot of commercial storefronts using that machine.

With my previous renovation business it was go go go, trying to keep them happy.

originally with the cnc i was pushing it to the limit old habits, big mistakes happened,

Now its just take a woooooh sar moment ,is what it is

find that sweet spot of the tool and just cruise. i throw all my jobs into Mill mage prior to quoting ,work out cut time add around 30 -40 % to that , which allows for , sheet loading , clamps material removals table cleaning, and bit of leeway

say your cutting 20 pieces out of a sheet the difference in time running at say 1200mm/m or 1800 be only around 10 min

consistant material like mdf , partical board, high grade furniture ply you can dialin like ceser said

the general pine ply we have is a pain to cut one sheet will cut like butter , the next is like hardwood

The bulk of my work is custom one offs, I now dictate the time frame for completion date customer take it or leave it, what ive found is they all just wait :smiley:

can just see the blank look on their faces after your priceless response,

and at times expensive items have more things to go wrong , and they aways go wrong at the worst time , and parts are always 6weeks away
