In progress LowRider 4 with vacuum table and TOCKnife



Hi!

This is my in progress built : LR4 with a vacuum table and a tangential oriented cutting knife.

Prototype tool is ready to test, now working on the table and LR4.

I want mostly to cut some cardboard stuff, but I also want to be able to occasionally use the router too. Also want to use the router to make the vacuum plenum sheet.

Since I have at hands 6 external drivers, a universal controller and an Airedale expander for my project, I need a different box. I also want to put the Airedale expander and the pendant/display module connector in the same box. This leads to this big box. I don’t need the fan there since drivers are external.

Now I need to fit the external drivers another place. Since I have 8 braces, that makes 7 interbraces : one for the controller box, 6 for external driver. I think I will fit an external driver in each interbrace left, like this :

Will you use a fan on each external driver?

Not sure it’s required, I mean I have DM542 drivers and they are for much higher current then what’s used here. The big heat sink and natural air flow should do it.

From this DM542 manual, it operates at 60C or less. It should be mounted vertically, but I can’t put them in a true vertical position without interfering with the hose and cables tray.

I’ll make printed angled supports to put them this way and use a remix of the braces covers like this :

Looks pretty good. Make sure to add some real pictures when you have some. You get way more downloads when you can see the real thing.

I haven’t exactly taken the easy route with this build! Between the custom controller setup, external drivers, enclosure modifications, and all the configuration work, it’s been quite a journey.

The machine is not fully operational yet, but if all goes according to plan, I’m hoping to have it cutting by the end of the summer. Wish me luck!

FluidNc Dial CYD pendant assembly done !

I will need to tweak it to show knife axis (A) info and a macros for homing this axis too…

Your progress is inspiring!

I’ve played a bit with the FluidDial-CYD firmware and had success in changing my futur knife axis “A” to show degree symbol ° instead of “mm”.

I’m glad that the A axis automatically shown on the FluidDial-CYD when configured in the CNC controller YAML and UART connection is established between them. I tough I would have to mod for this, but no ! But it was showing as mm units, but the axis is a rotary one, so I gave it a shot at changing the unit in the code…

Anyway this update was not mandatory, but it helped me understood the structure a bit.

I’m also happy that I successfully create a YAML file for my setup.

The only thing left to do for this pendant is to create a macro helping in zeroing the knife blade angle. Homing the blade doesn’t mean it’s in the right position, an offset must be applied after homing…
