i watched the videos you had posted on youtube and am quite interested in your project! the thing is, I don’t have a 3d printer, so will need to have those parts printed. to compound the matter, i live up here in Canada! i’m not sure how to solve those issues, but perhaps if someone here is in the ottawa, ontario area and has a 3d printer that might help? tks.
now onto another topic – it looked like in one of the photos, you used a dremel. i think that is cool because dremels are much more accessible for me.
a question i have regarding routers – are hand held battery powered ones good enough? I’m thinking of the dewalt brushless but not sure if that would work.
I have a Makita brushless 18V trim router and the 230V mains equivalent. Using both I’ve never really noticed a difference in power or anything. I’d assume the same for the DeWalt.
I wouldn’t want to use one in a conventional CNC machine but I think they would be a perfect fit for this application. If the battery flattens and it turns off then you’re gonna just stop moving the machine, not bury a stopped bit into a workpiece and skips steps or break bits.
As for the 3D printer, there’s never really been a better time to get into it. If you have a look around there are some remarkably capable options for not much money and I think you’d be surprised how useful they can be once you get into it. I think their usefulness for ‘big’ project stuff like this is actually relatively limited as most people won’t build a lot of big projects like that, the real advantage is in little stuff that makes life a bit easier like organizers, jigs, small parts for repairing or upgrading existing tools, that kinda stuff.
Perhaps take a look at the topic here about the Flashforge A5M I think it is. Quite a few people seem to be having good results with that.
Hey, I have a 3D printer, I’m actually just putting together an order for the PCBs and aluminum plate. I live in Toronto and I could print and ship the stuff for you and we could split on the PCBs/aluminum plate. It’ll be cheaper that way.
