Sort some ignorant questions. Is this a bed slinger? Is there auto bed leveling?what’s the size of the bed. How does this compare to the Bambu lab p-s. Yes I understand it’s a 3d printer self build backed by the great v1e team. Sorry and thanks. Btw I have a p1s and I love it. Looking to see if this build can have some advantages besides price (which would be due to labor & programming savings)
No
Yes
Whatever you want. Generally 250x250 - 350x350.
It doesn’t.
It’s much more expensive, louder, and a lot more work to get it to print as well.
A DIY printer is fun to build, and a good experience to have, but it just won’t compare to the cost and the “out-of-the-box”-ness of the Bambu.
The only advantages you get from building it yourself, is the knowledge you gain from building it yourself, the fun of the build, the customization of size and features, and being able to say you did it yourself.
Bambu, Qidi, etc. will win on cost, quality, ease of use, etc.
- is this a bed slinger: no, it is a core XY (similar to the P1S, but the bed is very different)
- is there auto bed leveling: yes. it has 3 motors to tilt the bed to level (think voron trident. example of my first one that started as a v4 here)
- the v5 is designed for a 300x300 mm (12"x12") bed (larger… p1s is 275x275 10x10).
- advantages: education. Self build customization, high end or budget build possible.
- disadvantages: Time. it takes a lot of time to source, size, assemble, test, and tune.
there is no kit to buy for this one. You can buy a voron kit. This system is a great design and very capable. It will take a long time to build and must be done carefully to ensure a square machine that will yield a quality print. You can make it cheaper by buying cheap components, but you can also put in good parts and make it really nice. If you use klipper firmware control software, you can customize it a ton. It all depends on what you want. After building 2 of these because I bought a few parts at a time over a long time, I wonder if I might have been better off from a time perspective to have saved all the money and purchased a couple Qidi systems like a Q2 machine or another multicolor system that would have cost about the same, but not have taken all the time. I really enjoyed and suffered through the build and earned some understanding. This isn’t to discourage you from building, just to set a realistic understanding that the time investment is significant.
Brandon, there are 5 different versions of the printer! All are available! The first 2 or 3 versions are/were bedslingers and in fact great printers! Now if you want the latest one no, it is core xy and a very nice printer! Ryan has kept all the versions available and I believe you will find assistance for any of the models you want to make! As for how they compare, now that is a loaded question. I myself have highly modified ender and longer bed slingers. If you buy bambu, etc, they are hard to modify. You build one of these v1 printers you will know how to repair modify always! Now if you want to print tomorrow there are many nice printers on the market, in fact Ryan just had a post with how pleased he was with a purchased printer, the designer of the printers here! Welcome to the forum!
