I am looking to understand how to crop/edit this file so the pattern ends at the border. Am I missing something easy?
I tried the background on separate and the same layer, and I feel like I have tried all the path tools, difference, cut, exclude, etc. help file.zip (3.7 MB)
In Inkscape, try moving all of the objects to the same layer. Draw a boundary rectangle around what you want. Select your boundary rectangle and raise it to the top. Select all of the objects and then Object, Clip, Set.
If you try converting that file to gcode to burn with a laser or plot all the hidden patterns will reappear in the gcode file. To see this Select View --> Display Mode --> Outline. To actually remove the cut bits from the file is a little different.
Select the layer with the little patterns, Hide and lock the others.
Select all the patterns.
Select Path --> Union
Go get a cup of coffee.
Draw a rectangle over the area you want to keep
Hold shift and select the select the patterns. (They are all one now)
Select Path --> Intersection
The paths outside the rectangle will actually be deleted and all the new lines needed to keep your paths closed will be automatically added.
This file will now work with Inkscape gcodetools and JTech Laser Tool.
