Help getting all my ducks in a row before ordering

I’ve spent all day on here and YouTube trying to make sure I understand everything before I put in my order for the LR3 Kit. I have a DW618, but after reading up on it, I’m going to go ahead and buy the Makita 700 series for this build and keep my 618 for other uses. The issue is, I can’t find anyone talking about the order materials for a LR3.

With that said, I know I also will have to build a table for this to mount on as well as the 3/4 EMT Conduit. My question is: Does the kit cover everything else outside of the router, table, and conduit?

Going through the list on the kit, I’m wanting to build a full 4’ x 8’ machine. I don’t think I need to add any belt for that… but I’m not confident about that.

I’m planning on getting:

  • SKR Pro and Touch Screen
  • 1/8" collet for the Makita
  • set of LR3 3D Printed Parts and Metal XZ plates
  • 3D printed control board and screen box
  • single flute endmills
  • precut YZ Plates.

To summarize this post, I also know I’ll need:

  • a Table
  • A 700 series Makita Router
  • EMT Conduit

Is there anything else I’m missing? Struts (if so, what material are those)? Other attachments?

Thanks for the help and looking forward to being a part of this community!

If you’re going to spend for the Makita I would say get the Kobalt trim router instead. The ER11a collet gives you more bit options and it comes with the 1/4" and 1/8" collets.

Hope this helps! Lots of love! <3

Joke aside: You will need some HDF or aluminium ~5mm thick for the strut plates. You can cut them yourself after you’ve build your LowRider or just build a temporary table to cut them.

You might also want to consider the Jackpot board that is cheaper than the SKR and especially designed by Ryan for his CNCs. It’s pretty good from what I’ve seen and connecting it was incredibly easy. That being said, I would definitely buy the additional cables (Stepper extender wires. – V1 Engineering Inc). For the LowRider you need 3. It saves you hours of crimping for a few dollars.

You might also consider the Kobalt Router of you are from the US. It’s pretty affordable and has got an ER11 collet. If you bought the Makita, you’d have to get an 1/8 collet for it as well (as can be seen in your order).

Belts are fine if you are going with 4x8.

@Broncos_Fan I second this statement as well as what @Tokoloshe has said about the Kobalt router and the Jackpot board.

I recently started my build, and in my order, I got the Jackpot, SD Card (just to make sure it would work), Touch Plate (I have other CNC machines and these are money!!), and the basic LRv3 Kit. The kit came with the extension cables, power supply, and everything else that is needed to put together the machine. According to the listing:

Still needed -

1- Option above - Your own Control Board
-You have indicated the SKR and the TFT (I would recommend the Jackpot, but ultimately is up to you)

2- Option above- Printed parts
-You are ordering these, so good there.

3- Option above- Flat parts
-You are getting the metal XZ and the precut YZ, so good there.

4- Buy locally- EMT Conduit or other suitable X and Y rails.
-Correct, you still need to get these

5- Buy, make, or reuse -a table to use it on,
-Yup…need this too!

6- Buy locally- a router or other tool, Makita 700 series is excellent
-You can get the Makita (with additional collet), or get the Kobalt that already comes with it, as well as ER-11a compatible (ER-11a Nut and collets will need to be purchased separately)

7- On hand or buy locally- and some cable ties (working on getting some), or other methods of securing wires.
-Will need to get these (aka zip ties). Not really thick ones as they need to fit into the holes that are built into the printed parts (and be sure to cut off the tails once secured. Management around here really frouns upon not cutting them off!!)

8- Buy Locally- You will also need some 3-5.3mm wood or other material for the Strut plates,
In the instructions struts can be “…up to 6.35mm (¼“) thick. Hardboard or any similarly rigid materials work best here.”

9- Option above- and possibly an endmill to cut them with, make sure it fits you router.
-Good here as you are planning to order.

So to sum it up, you still need a table, router, emt conduit, zip ties, and material that is up to 1/4" thick to cut out your struts (I got a full sheet of hardboard as the struts for a full 4x8 build should be about 55" long). If you don’t like the look of bare wires running all over, you can get wire wrap/loom to hide them in. That is sold in the shop as well. Not sure how much you would need.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for making this post. I am going to take a hard look at the LR3 page to see if I can make that a bit more clear.

That plug-in I use for the options is kinda wonky (and expensive). I need to poke at it a bit more to get the right info, sorry for the confusion, but asking the questions means you will fit in nicely around here!

I noticed a couple things after I got my kit that I had to pick up separately:

  1. When ordering the Jackpot with the kit, it doesn’t give the option to include an SD card like it does individually.
  2. With the infamous grub screws, I’m surprised threadlocker isn’t included in the kit. I see it’s an option separately.

I just finished my LR3. I have not powered it on yet because I know when I do I’ll be out in the garage for hours lol. It looks like you’re on the right track. The advice given is perfect. I went the exact route you did. I do have a printer and could have printed the parts. I did print some parts but decided I just wanted to have them right away lol. I did the makita router on mine because when I built mine the Kobalt was not an option yet, I will be upgrading to that eventually. I want to get use to everything before I start making upgrades. For you, I would go ahead and get the kobalt since you haven’t got as far as I have. I almost purchased the skr board but after talking with a few of the guys, I decided on the jackpot board instead.

I will try to fix that now, I thought I changed that a few days ago. (I just added the Jackpot as an option).

I can’t find a good source. I only have 3 little tubes left.
