Guitar Build (Travel Gibson SG)

I’ve been tinkering/improving my MPCNC with the goal of cutting out some guitars and I think I’ve finally gotten there. Here are some pics of the first guitar cut with the right dimensions to fit the neck I bought with a kit. It fits the neck like a very snug glove, just the way it should. Thanks Ryan. Next up is a Telecaster.

I used 2x12 dimensional lumber so I couldn’t make it the full width. You can see the full size body that came with the kit in the last picture.

Awesome!!!

Fantastic !

What software did you use, and where did you get the model from or did you make it yourself ?

Thanks!

I made the model myself based off measurements from own SG. I didn’t want to take mine apart to get all the measurements so I bought an inexpensive kit online so I could get the measurements for the internal cavities: tail/bridge, controls, pickups and neck.

I used OpenScad for the modeling so it was easy to add modules for other tail/bridge combos and I parameterized the neck pocket so I can change it easily based off the dimensions of the neck I’m building for (ultimately I’d like to build necks as well but I thought starting with the bodies would be easier to get the experience and work the kinks out).

After getting satisfied with the model, I used ESTLCam to produce the tool paths and Gcode.

I am almost done with an OpenScad model for the Fender Telecaster. I’ll share pictures of that as soon as I cut one…

If there are others interested in building guitars here, maybe we can share models…?

I’d love to make one at some point, just need a bit more experience with CNC’ing and increase my frame size

Did you make it as a polygon in OpenScad ?

Looking forward to seeing your telecaster!

From OpenScad, a model can be exported in various formats. STL and DXF are the most popular for me.

I finished up the Telecaster model and knocked one out tonight. Again, I used 2x12 so it’s not as wide as a normal Telecaster (about an inch (25mm) less than normal).

The Telecaster neck I bought fits the pocket like a glove again (this machine is soo cool). So now I need to finish shaping them, put some finish on (coming next week) and add all the parts…

Very nice

Did you ever try to mill the neck too? @mattclark-ggmail-com
