Gcode from estlcam makes a mess

I’m attempting to cut the struts. I loaded the strut plate file into estlcam and produced this file. I can draw out the x and y with a pen but when I use the router the z immedately drops down about 10mm and proceeds to chew up the board.

Can you upload your ESTLCam source file, and also the outputted G-Code file as attachments?

Normally the way to do this is put them (one or both) into a Zip file, and attach the Zip file.

It’s unclear, from your question how you set up the machine before starting the gcode. Did you reset the Z axis to “know” where the top of the work piece is? If you didn’t, this is the most common reason we see this happening.

Which Controller is on your machine and how do you position the machine before beginning the cut?

Review this page if you haven’t done it recently.

I see from the gcode that the first move command “G00 X0.00 Y0.00 Z0.00” puts the machine at the 0,0,0 point in the workspace. The standard Z homing (up) puts the Z axis at 200mm and there isn’t 200mm of actual vertical travel in the Z axis, so as it tries to go to Z0 it will crash into the work piece.

This is the reason for the “touch plate” that Ryan offers and, depending on your controller, is why there is a menu or button macro that does “Probe” or “Reset all coordinates”.

The normal procedure is to move the router to the point where you want to start your workspace (and therefore the cut), move the Z down to the surface of the work piece, and reset all coordinates before starting the gcode.

If you have the touch plate and your controller supports it, you can “Probe” the Z axis down to the surface and it will automatically reset the Z zero position, compensating for the thickness of the touch plate.

If you don’t have the touch plate, or your controller doesn’t support the probe function, simply move the Z axis down until the tip of the router bit is touching the surface (I use a piece of paper to see how close it is, kind of like you do with a 3d printer) and then reset the coordinates.

I found the command. I could not find it in the touch screen interface. I found it in the other interface. I use the touchscreen interface because it’s the only one that recognizes the SD card

If you put the SD card in the controller instead of the TFT you can run it all from the Marlin interface.

That’s the workflow I’ve been using since I started with the V1E machines.

I just do it all in the monochrome menu system and ignore the touch screen.
