Floating Z Axis

I found this “Floating Z Axis” and was wondering if anyone has re-mixed it for the MPCNC.
Searching didn’t produce results for me.

I like it as a pen holder as well as a torch holder for a plasma. Obviously I’ll be using the pen first.
Thx

For the pen, Ryan already did a mount : https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1612207

And for the plasma torch, I don’t get the point. Isn’t the height critical for good cuts ?

I’ll try Ryan’s mount for the pen first, thanks.

I do like the floating mount for the pen application though, as the height can be set to maintain a moderate pressure when on a surface that isn’t dead flat. As for the plasma, you are correct, maintaining height is critical for making good cuts, I’m no expert, just now learning, this is my understanding.

This is the purpose of the THC, it maintains voltage across the arc through height control. The floating Z axis is used for touching off the torch and setting height before initial pierce of the material. A limit switch is part of the assembly.

As the material takes on heat, it will start to move / warp, this is where the THC earns it’s money.

I found these videos useful in gaining my current understanding:

Hi Guys,

For those that are interested I have modified the Floating Z to be able to screw to the MPCNC tool plate.

Its untested however I have printed it and it all seems to work.

I have also added a 35mm bracket to hold a p80 plasma torch
