First fancy hat!

Finally, over 12 months in the making (kept getting distracted by other projects…) my MPCNC has produced a picture of a crown!

This is my first foray into DIY CNC. It has a 450x300mm cutting area, and is entirely self-contained as a portable unit - since I don’t have space to keep it permanently out. I will probably end up adding some hooks so it can be hung on a wall when not in use. You can tell I got carried away with the base, I’ve made a few bits of furniture over the years an the perfectionist in me could leave it just unfinished MDF or whatever. (I suspect I’ll regret that decisions once it starts taking a bit of battle damage in use.)

Pretty standard build other than perhaps the base, which also contains all the electronics (SKR Pro v1.2). Custom designed TFT housing, switch panel, cable chain solution and a few other bits and bobs; dual endstops. I have a Makita router and the aim is to cut aluminium, mainly.

Here is the (rather cramped) electronics section. There’s 2x40mm fans pulling air through the whole lot. I can take some better pictures if people are interested.

Still to do: check it’s drawing square squares, think about attaching the spoilboard - and then cut something!

And it’s dirty! First test cut!

(I had a helper…)

Forgive the unusual workpiece clamping method, I wanted to try cutting something first before getting it to drill the holes for the spoilboard.

I use stones, sidewalk tiles, concrete clinker (google translation, don’t know if this is real English), even 12V batteries. So no problem with that!

Double-sided tape for me, so far. Has worked well with melamine-wrapped particle board, pink insulation foam, and baltic birch. Doesn’t move when I don’t want it to, and I can pull it up reasonably easily when I need to.

At some point, I want to either mill t-track into the MDF base, or add spoilboards and aluminum t-track, but until then the tape is a good solution, and no risk of accidentally running into it with the core or router.

Congrats on your crown, also that wiring job is sleek, well done!

Thanks Josh, more out of necessity as I didn’t leave much room for the wiring in the compartment!
