First build squaring issues

Hi,
My son and I are doing our first MPCNC build. We have everything assembled except for the belts and are trying to square the gantry. We are able to get it less than a 1/16” fro, side to side but need to tighten the truck clamps to the point where there seems to be way too much resistance on that axis. When we back off the clamps to have a free moving slide we are about 1/8” difference from side to side. This is true on both X & Y. I know the bases are square to each other within about 1/32”. I tried to play with the core clamps. I do not understand which one I need to tighten to help but I snugged all 4 independently and none of them made an impact. Any thoughts?

You should square the trucks before installing the core and then only adjust the core to return to square. At the end of the day, the last little bit will be from the motors moving in lockstep to keep it square.

I did square the trucks before we installed the core but it was out after installing core and since the core clamps made no effect, we adjusted the trucks. So is 1/8” close enough? We do have the dual end stops but I was not planning on starting with that option enabled.

Should we take the core back off, square trucks again and then reinstall core or just move forward at 1/8” out?

I’m not sure. If it were my machine, I would run it a bit before I worried too much about it.

You don’t need to run endstops yet (I still haven’t installed them on mine). You can put something (a clamp or something) in the square alignment and then just hold the gantry against it while enabling the motors. Then it will hold square with the motors.

I’m up to the point of squaring the trucks also, and I have read the instructions several times, but it would sure be nice if there was a video or a more in-depth detailed walk-thru explanation for us newcomers, of the procedure by one of the experienced veteran builders.

I am sure you will be an experienced builder in no time. I would love to see a good video on it (or even a mediocre one).

I haven’t ever done it, myself. I have only read the instructions.

Well thanks for the encouragement Jeff, can’t wait till I get the build finished!

BTW, the eb3 after your name doesn’t refer to the “EB3” bass guitar does it?

Sorry, nope. It is because I started with jeffeb on aol, and then it was full of spam, so I switched to jeffeb2 and then jeffeb3, and then spam filters were invented.
