My girlfriend is director of a pre-school. She needs a way to mark the muster point for fire drills that’s easy for the young kids to identify and find. Her idea…a Fire Drill Dinosaur.
She asked me if I could use the CNC to make her a “3 foot or so tall dinosaur in a firemans hat”
Yeah…I think I can do that!
We found a cartoon dinosaur design she liked - I used inkscape to trace it into a path and then distorted it a bit to fit her dimension requirements. Then did my cut and painted it up:
The painting isn’t quite done yet. I still need to fix some blemishes on the dino, and her staff is going to add some yellow spots and a face. They’ll probably also add some black accents on the hat.
Quick fun project out of one 2’x4’ piece of ply with enough left over for some smaller projects. He’ll mount to an existing post on the school property.
The hat was my first try doing some pocketing…could have come out better…but for a first try I’m pretty happy with it.
Just to clarify - far from my first project. Just my first one that included any kind of pocketing operation. Most of my projects are just flat stock. But I’ve been looking for excuses to start trying more 2D stuff and even picked up some bits to try some carving. Just…haven’t found anything I really want to carve just yet
Thankfully I don’t have to deal with the parent group. But being a small school on a local reservation that’s being really hit hard by what’s going on in DC I have be called on to take care of quite a few interesting tasks that risk slipping through the cracks. Their own support staff couldn’t figure out a way to mount their new mandated bulletin boards to the outside of their steel buildings…wouldn’t have been that hard except it was 115f the day I was available to go deal with it…and of course it was on the sunny side of the building
When my son was really little in day care they did a fire drill. At that age, they put 5 babies in a crib and wheel it outside, two cribs makes a class.
My son was napping and they put 4 other kids in with him and he stayed asleep through the whole thing.
When i was a wee one we were camping and a bear came and ate our food. i slept through it only beleaveing the story months later when the pictures were developed they said the tryied everything to wake me up. I do remember waking up in the car and not the tent i went to bed in. The pictures were actually a attempt to scare it away with the flash bulbs.
