Hi folks - struggling to find anything here in Ireland that is 29.5mm, 30mm, or 32mm OD - best I’ve found is a 30mm curtain rail which probably has a very thin wall thickness, or something 31.75mm OD. Only looking to start with a 1mx1m bed - is it better to compromise on wall thickness or precise OD?
Has anybody ever customized the printed parts to fit?
I found some previous posts with success using 31.75mm but wondering if anybody with a UK/Ireland perspective has anything to add?!
I use 31.75mm nominal tube with 32mm size printed parts. It works okay.
The fit of the tube is not as tight as it is with other V1 projects where I used the actual correct size, but it is still within tolerable limits. With that, keep in mind that V1 projects have had different printed parts for 25mm and 25.4mm sized tubing, so 0.25mm is actually a difference, and it does matter.
That all said, it also works for me.
It’s kind of weird. When the LR4 was being designed, Ryan put out a request for available tubing sizes. The 1” nominal conduit (the 29.5mm size) he knew because it’s commonly available in the USA (And Canada) at big box stores, He got the 30mm and 32mm size information from metric countries as available, and it seems that even in metric countries, 32mm is pretty rare and difficult to find, but the 31.75mm (Which corresponds to 1.25”) is quite common just about everywhere. I don’t have direct evidence, but the number of people I’ve seen that ask about 31.75mm is rather high, and not from the USA.
”Any orders to be shipped outside of Mainland UK (e.g. Channel Islands, Northern Ireland, Scottish Highlands) that contain cable or an oversized item will need to have the carriage cost priced on application. Please call our sales team who will provide you with an accurate quote as the £5.87 or free delivery option will not stand. This is due to the charges passed onto us by our carriers for deliveries that aren’t mainland England, Scotland and Wales. Please refer to our exclusions list in order to see if your postcode is included.”
@Tokoloshe Indeed I was quite excited to see I could make it work with 31.75mm, until I discovered this too is proving difficult to source! Would love to make it over to Manchester for this, but not sure the timlines will work - maybe next year
@SupraGuy Good to know - thanks for the reply! I wish 25mm was an option for the v4 - much easier source, even in my local town.
@FreneticScribbler Indeed 20mm and 25mm galv conduit is easy - 32mm is like hens teeth!
I spent an hour on the phone trying to find somebody who had it in Cork/Dublin, and best I got was an “i’ll call you back after contacting my supplier”, but nobody really wants to sell just 2-3 lengths of the stuff. Really appreciate the offer of shipping - that’s very kind! I’m not too worried about the cost, but I feel like I should be able to find some option in Ireland if I try hard enough!
32mm galv conduit is deffinately a thing -lots of places sell the fittings for it, just nobody i’ve found so far selling the actual conduit!
I’ll be sure to reply back when I finally find a solution - in the hopes it helps somebody in future.
Yeah these days people just run multiple 20mm rather than use a 32mm. When using the conduit for its intended purpose that is
And even if you found old imperial conduit to pull out of somewhere, our 1” conduit is OD, whereas american 1” EMT is ID.
Agreed. Conduit is not the route I think. There’s gotta be a metal stockholder with 30mm tube somewhere in RoI
Gonna have some left over from SMRRF LR4 if you want it but I guess UK → RoI means customs and all that fun? (Not shipped anything outside of England since we decided to drop the portcullis )
The only place I was able to source something that matched the 32mm specs was from a company in Belfast, who very kindly cut a 3m length into three parts for me:
Verified measurements with caliper when the part arrived - all good. Thickness is a hair off at 1.2mm, but good enough i hope! I haven’t gotten to assembly yet, but wanted to report back with a result!
